The Walking Dead season 11 villains, the Reapers, are very skilled human killers, according to showrunner Angela Kang. Based on Robert Kirkman’s comics of the same name, the post-apocalyptic AMC series has shocked fans with cliffhangers and character deaths since its debut nearly ten years ago. The eleventh and final season of The Walking Dead is set to release in August 2021, and will adapt issues 175-193 of the comics as the central group encounters the network of communities known as the Commonwealth.

The long-delayed Walking Dead season 10 finale aired on AMC in October after its premiere was pushed back in April due to the coronavirus pandemic. Episode 16 was intended to air a week after episode 15, but production was brought to a halt and AMC decided to expand season 10 with six additional episodes, which began airing back in February. The first of the extended season 10 episodes, “Home Sweet Home,” showed a lone member of the new villainous group, the Reapers, attack and kill Maggie’s group and nearly kill Daryl and Maggie. The camouflaged man only utters three words before blowing himself up, “Pope marked you.” The Walking Dead season 11 trailer released during Comic-Con@Home 2021 teased the return of the Reapers in the upcoming season.

During The Walking Dead panel for Comic-Con@Home 2021, showrunner Angela Kang discussed the group’s conflict with the Reapers in season 11. Kang teased that the new enemy group will pose a major threat to the survivors and be unlike anything they’ve faced before. Read Kang’s full statement below:

“One of the things that sets them apart is that they are incredibly skilled, and not skilled like they had to pick it up along the way. They were skilled coming into the apocalypse. So every single one of them is like an incredibly brutal, organized warrior. Whereas the Whispers sort of had this chaotic way that they went about the world and moved with walkers. These are the pinnacle of human killers. It’s just a very formidable type of enemy to go up against. They don’t rely on numbers and volume of people to fight against in order to kind of survive, so they’re a tight-knit group, and they’re just really formidable in a way that our characters don’t often come across.”

The Walking Dead will end with an expanded season 11 that will span two years and consist of 24 episodes, ending sometime in 2022. Season 11 began filming in February, and recent set photos have shown first looks at some new characters. The new season will also lead into some spinoffs, including the Daryl and Carol spinoff show, a new anthology series, and the upcoming Rick Grimes movies.

With 24 episodes, season 11 already seems like it will be quite packed with action and more for the fan-favorite characters. It appears that the Reapers will be a prominent storyline in season 11, which is one of bigger departures from the comics the season looks to be making. While iconic Walking Dead villains like the Governor, Negan, the Whisperers, and the Commonwealth community all come from Kirkman’s comics, the Reapers are completely original to the show, which makes them all the more sinister and mysterious for viewers. Fans will likely find out just what Kang means when The Walking Deadseason 11 premieres on August 22.
