WandaVision’s surprising Quicksilver cameo was an early idea when crafting the MCU series, according to series creator Jac Schaeffer. Episode 5, “On A Very Special Episode…”, ends with Vision (Paul Bettany) finally confronting Wanda (Elizabeth Olsen) about their strange, constructed reality. Before the argument can escalate into the superpowers territory, there’s a ring of the doorbell. Wanda opens the door to find her long dead brother Pietro – but not the one played by Aaron Taylor-Johnson alongside Olsen’s Wanda in Avengers: Age Of Ultron; this is the version of Quicksilver from Fox’s X-Men movies, which take place outside of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, played by Evan Peters.

Peters’ appearance sent shockwaves through the Marvel fandom, with many wondering if his appearance opens the door for the X-Men films to somehow be integrated into the MCU, perhaps through the multiverse, which is set to be further explored in Doctor Strange In The Multiverse Of Madness and the next Tom Holland-starring Spider-Man film.

In a new interview with Marvel, head writer Jac Schaeffer explains that the idea to bring in Peters’ iteration of Quicksilver was an early one, and that they were pleased that the actor was game to come back and play the role again.

We loved the idea of [bringing him back]. And then we were like, how in the world are we going to make this make logical sense? Like, how do we justify this? Because that’s the thing, you can hatch a million great ideas, but to make them land, to make them be grounded, to make them feel organic to the larger story.

Schaeffer goes on to praise Peters’ performance, and confirms they’re embracing the sitcom trope of the long lost family member who gets re-cast. Schaeffer is a little cagier when it comes to addressing the larger, multiversal ramifications of a character crossing over from another shared universe. The possibilities for what could come next are almost limitless, as rumors also swirl over multiple iterations of Spider-Man potentially showing up in that hero’s next solo outing, as Marvel dips their toe into the multiverse concept.

WandaVision has been a huge hit with both fans and critics for its daring, innovative storytelling. It’s a fair bit stranger than anything else in the MCU, showing the universe can tell unconventional stories as well as its bread and butter superhero throw downs. Schaeffer and her writing staff have kept Marvel fans enthralled and obsessive over every little detail of the series. They know very well that they’re letting fans’ imaginations run wild with the Peters Quicksilver cameo. If WandaVision is an accurate barometer for the kind of quality and excitement fans can expect from the Disney+ Marvel series, then the MCU will likely conquer the small screen just like it has the big screen.
