WandaVision Star Kathryn Hahn Reacts to Popular Agatha Harkness Meme

WandaVision star Kathryn Hahn reacts to a popular Agatha Harkness meme. Hahn portrayed two roles in WandaVision, that of Wanda Maximoff’s nosy Westview neighbor Agnes and Agatha Harkness, the powerful witch out for Wanda’s powers. Agatha became a fan favorite character in WandaVision due to her catchy villain song “Agatha All Along” and also because of Hahn’s brilliant portrayal. Hahn is currently nominated for a Best Supporting Actress Emmy for WandaVision performance.

While many Marvel comic book fans suspected Hahn’s Agnes character was actually Agatha Harkness, no one was prepared for Agatha’s big reveal in episode seven, “Breaking the Fourth Wall.” Agatha had been the only one in Westview other than Vision that was able to resist Wanda’s magic. Agatha’s aim had been to keep Wanda in her fantasy long enough to steal the chaos magic Wanda didn’t even realize she had. Ironically, Agatha’s goal backfired spectacularly, resulting in Wanda coming to terms with her destiny as the powerful Scarlet Witch and trapping Agatha in her Agnes role in Westview.

Hahn herself does not have social media. As a result, her reaction to a popular Agatha Harkness meme that started circulating after episode 3 of WandaVision is quite amusing. The meme itself features the user saying something that is obviously not true, complete with a photo of Agatha winking to Vision. Check out what Hahn had to say about the meme that is pictured below (courtesy of Kristen Arnett) via an interview with Today. 

“First of all, I was like, ‘Could they have chosen a less flattering photograph for me to see in perpetuity for the rest of my life?’ It’s totally surreal and doesn’t make real sense. But I’m tickled by it.”

Hahn’s reaction to the popular Agatha meme is completely understandable. The mere fact that Agatha became a meme that’s popular with people that haven’t even watched WandaVision is quite an impressive feat. And after all, the way the meme is utilized is true to what Agatha was doing in the moment she was making the winking face Hahn found unflattering. That was the scene where Vision (Paul Bettany) actually started to realize that something strange was going on in Westview. Agatha quickly tries to distract Vision from investigating things any further, sealing her magical machinations with a sassy wink.

All funny memes aside, Hahn’s fantastic portrayal of Agatha was one of the best surprises that came out of WandaVision. Wanda always needed a good foil and an (unintentional) mentor to match her in magic-wielding abilities. Hahn did such a good job of portraying Agatha’s nuances that it was difficult not to understand her side of things, even though it was still ideal that Wanda triumphed in the end. According to Marvel president Kevin Feige, WandaVision was not the end of Agatha Harkness. Hopefully her return will be sooner rather than later.
