The WandaVision song “Agatha All Along” was inspired by The Addams Family and The Munsters. Kristen Anderson-Lopez and Robert Lopez are the songwriters who worked on the Disney+ series. They received Emmy award nominations for the show’s main theme and the song “Agatha All Along.” WandaVision‘s music proved instrumental to each episode capturing a different decade of television with its look, costuming, and major story elements.

“Agatha All Along” delivered what was arguably the show’s biggest moment. After months of speculation leading up to WandaVision‘s release and through its first several episodes, the song finally confirmed Kathryn Hahn’s character as the Marvel Comics witch Agatha Harkness. WandaVision viewers responded well to both Hahn’s delightful performance and the music itself, leading to remixes and other homages, as well as the song appearing on different music charts. Even now, several months after its debut, “Agatha All Along” remains enormously popular.

While speaking with THR, Anderson-Lopez and Lopez talked about how the song came to be. Lopez explained the writers of WandaVision already had an idea of how they wanted the song to be, with the original title a play on That’s So Raven, but under the context of Agatha. The songwriters had difficulty bringing it all together, as they also tried an approach inspired by That Girl, although they ended up going with a more “witchy” vibe. Explained Anderson-Lopez:

I think at 3 in the morning one day, I was like, ‘We should look at The Addams Family and The Munsters. We should go to that witchy kind of place that TV does have history in. [That morning,] I ran into the shower, and I think I came out of the shower and the lyrics were written.

The songwriting duo has previously won two Oscars and was nominated for a third. Their first win was in 2014 for Frozen‘s “Let it Go” and their second was in 2018 for Coco‘s “Remember Me.” While they were nominated for their work in 2020 for Frozen 2‘s “Into the Unknown,” they ultimately lost to Rocketman‘s “(I’m Gonna) Love Me Again.” The songwriting duo has had impressive success, particularly when it comes to working with Disney. For this reason, it’s not much of a surprise their songs for WandaVision, especially “Agatha All Along,” have been so well received.

Hahn’s performance as Agatha is absolutely magnetic and rightfully inspired a lot of attention on social media. She also earned an Emmy award nomination for her performance. “Agatha All Along” does an incredible job revealing the true identity of the character, while also perfectly fitting into the context of WandaVision. Going with a more witchy theme makes sense, given the character’s background. It certainly wears its inspiration from The Addams Family and The Munsters on its sleeve in the best way possible. Hopefully, Anderson-Lopez and Lopez will have another opportunity to write songs for the Marvel Cinematic Universe again in the future.
