The Quicksilver fake-out in WandaVision season 1 made things a bit more complicated for the MCU. While Wanda Maximoff has been part of the MCU since Phase 2, the same can’t be said for her brother Pietro. Despite being set up in a big introduction through Avengers: Age of Ultron, only one of the twins survived. To prevent Hawkeye and a young boy from being shot, Quicksilver, played by Aaron Taylor-Johnson, jumped in front of them and took the damage. His quick death was due to it being back when the X-Men film rights weren’t owned by Marvel Studios. But all of that has changed as Marvel has gotten the X-Men IP back under their control along with the Fantastic Four and others.

The mutants will, at some point, be introduced to the MCU as Kevin Feige has already hinted that X-Men fans will see those characters. When they’re actually showing up is still a bit of a mystery as it could be in Phase 4 or much later. However, with the X-Men rights under Marvel’s ownership, it did seem as though Quicksilver was getting a second chance and with a very specific actor who was no stranger to playing the Marvel speedster. In a surprise appearance in episode 5 of WandaVision, Evan Peters showed up on Wanda and Vision’s doorstep, posing as a recast Pietro in the fake TV show.

Leading up to the season finale, clues seemed to indicate Peters’ Pietro was potentially a multiverse version of Quicksilver. Instead, WandaVision went in a totally different direction as Peters wasn’t an alternate universe version of Quicksilver at all. As Kathryn Hahn’s Agatha Harkness was revealed as the big bad for the first season, Pietro was shown to actually be just a human under Agatha’s spell, with his real name being Ralph Bohner. While it made sense for Agatha to use Pietro to manipulate Wanda, it also ruined the chance of the MCU having Quicksilver again.

Even though the X-Men films struggled before that franchise ended, Peters’ portrayal of Quicksilver was one of the more favored aspects in that universe. WandaVision was the perfect platform to have brought Pietro back into the MCU, but this time with Peters, who some have felt is a better fit for that character. But what the fake-out instead did was cause problems for the future of the MCU if they actually ever plan on somehow reviving Quicksilver. The events of WandaVision can’t be ignored if another iteration of Pietro shows up claiming to be who he says he is.

If anything, it would make more sense for Wanda to be even more hesitant in meeting another “Pietro” after Agatha’s cruel trick. Pietro’s death was crucial to Wanda’s character evolution of the last few years. Despite that, it still would be compelling to see how Quicksilver could play into the MCU today with where Wanda is now as the Scarlet Witch. But with the disappointing twist on the fake Quicksilver in WandaVision, it seems harder than ever to bring that character back.
