The long-awaited season finale in Call Of Duty: Warzone is a two-part event which will see players returning to the game’s smaller-scale Rebirth Island map. A calamity afflicting the battlefield of Verdansk has been teased by Activision for a long time, and as of today, April 21st, the company has finally made good on its threat, wiping out Verdansk in a nuclear blast.

While players have been waiting for this event for a long time, many fans have found that it is not living up to expectations. Numerous players are reporting major server queue issues which have completely barred them from taking part in the explosive event. Warzone is almost as famous for its disruptive bugs and issues as it is for its popular gameplay, so it’s perhaps fitting that the grand finale of season 2 should be marred by the game’s trademark technical issues.

In order to counteract these server problems, Activision is extending part 1 of the nuke event by an hour. This has not stopped the company from announcing the setting for part 2, however. The Call of Duty blog contains a set of military communiques directing operators to Rebirth Island following the fall of Verdansk and encouraging them to investigate the area for “information regarding the recent Containment Protocol Failure.” The new playlist features a nighttime version of the smaller map, and Call Of Duty News on Twitter confirms that the new playlist takes place 15 minutes after the destruction of Verdansk.

Time will tell what this development means for the future of the battle royale. The grim fate of Verdansk has been an open secret for some time, now, and Activision has clearly been enjoying itself teasing the destruction by slowly filling the map with zombies and sending ominous messages to players. Now that the fateful hour has finally arrived, fans of the game will have to wait and see what emerges from the ashes. Players have theorized anything from a brand new map to a simple reskin of Verdansk, making the region more compatible with the 1980s aesthetics of the series’ most recent mainline entry, Call Of Duty: Black Ops Cold War.

Much of the success of Warzone, as with any live service game, revolves around how much the game improves over time. Major events like the Verdansk nuke are a good way to keep player engagement high, but quality of life upgrades and bug fixes are just as important. Recently, developer Raven Software released a major debuff for the overpowered Sykov pistol, only days after the weapon was introduced. This shows that the developers are listening to feedback and working to make the game more enjoyable for all. Hopefully, between fixes like that and groundbreaking events like this nuke, Call Of Duty: Warzone can maintain its reputation as one of the biggest battle royales on the market.
