The newest expansion to Wasteland 3 adds the brand new location of Steeltown, complete with new quests, characters, locations, mechanics, and even music. The DLC adds a pile of new content to an already expansive game, bringing what Wasteland 3 has to offer to a whole new level. Even choices returning players have made in the base game will influence what happens in Steeltown, no matter what has been completed from the main game’s events.

Wasteland 3 released in August of 2020 after much anticipation from fans who’d waited eight years since the release of Wasteland 2. The most recent installment sought to deliver more of what players loved from the previous game, with an expansive, open-ended world, shaped directly by decisions made by the player. Wasteland 3 also continues the series’ strange sense of humor, as exemplified by a recent update that allows players to collect every pet available in the game.

The new expansion’s release was accompanied by a launch trailer posted by InXile, which showcases the game’s explosive new combat mechanics and story. Enemies will use new tactics and abilities such as elemental shields, super powered exoskeletons, and tar cannons that both damage and slow the player character and their squad. All of these abilities and more are part of the new stacking status effect feature. The DLC aims to bring more diversity to the enemies players will encounter, as well as capitalizing on player choice through the story offered in Steeltown.

The story of Steeltown tasks the game’s Ranger squad with traveling to the settlement that supplies the Patriarch with his vehicles and weapons, in order to resolve a conflict between the workers and the work bosses. Choices made in this new story will cause ripples throughout every corner of the expansion, and some NPCs in Steeltown will have things to say about the choices the characters and their companions have made in the base game as well. Players can begin the DLC early or late in their Wasteland 3 playthrough; Steeltown will adjust to whatever level they are.

InXile has also revealed that fans can buy the new Steeltown DLC, as well as the game’s other upcoming DLC, for a discounted price by buying the new Wasteland 3 Expansion Pass. It was recently found through a job posting from InXile that the company is working on a new first-person RPG in collaboration with Microsoft. Time will tell how this project stacks up to the positive legacy of Wasteland 3.
