Kerry Washington recently recreated Legally Blonde‘s iconic pool scene in a video posted to social media. The 2001 comedy film, directed by Robert Luketic and starring Reese Witherspoon, saw the character of Elle Woods, a sorority girl intent on winning back her ex-boyfriend, overcoming stereotypes and succeeding at Harvard Law School. Washington is best known for her role as Olivia Pope on the ABC series Scandal, as well as playing Broomhilda von Shaft in Quentin Tarantino’s Django Unchained. She and Witherspoon also co-starred in the Hulu series Little Fires Everywhere, in which one episode featured a sly Legally Blonde reference, and the two are friends in real life.

Since its release over two decades ago, Legally Blonde has found continued success and established a strong fanbase. Witherspoon earned praise for her portrayal of Elle Woods and received a nomination for Best Actress – Motion Picture Musical or Comedy at the 2001 Golden Globe Awards. The film eventually spawned its own franchise, with a sequel coming out two years later. That was followed by the Broadway production of Legally Blonde: The Musical and a 2009 spin-off, Legally Blondes. MGM Studios confirmed that another sequel was in development back in 2018, and it was later announced that Mindy Kaling and Dan Goor would write the script.

Kerry Washington excited fans of both hers and Legally Blonde when she recently posted a video on Instagram of her recreating the film’s iconic pool scene for Reese Witherspoon’s birthday. In the movie, the scene is part of Elle Woods’ video essay to Harvard University, where she explains why she would make a great lawyer. In Washington’s post, she jokes that the clips of her and Witherspoon’s character were deleted scenes from Little Fires Everywhere before wishing her friend a happy birthday. Kerry Washington is not the first star to express their love for Legally Blonde, or even replicate Elle Woods’ look. Back in 2019, Kim Kardashian recreated Elle’s video essay for Halloween, dressing as the character and generating buzz across social media. Alicia Silverstone also recently spoke about the possibility of reprising her role as Cher from Clueless and taking part in a crossover with Reese Witherspoon’s Legally Blonde protagonist. When asked about the idea, Silverstone said that it sounds fun and that she would be interested if Witherspoon was on board.

With more news surrounding the upcoming sequel continuing to come out, and original cast members like Witherspoon, Luke Wilson, and Jennifer Coolidge returning to star, fans have a lot to be excited about. As Kaling and Witherspoon offer updates on the Legally Blonde 3 film, it will only be a matter of time before audiences finally get to see the first footage. The fact that Kerry Washington and other stars frequently show their admiration also serves as a reminder of how beloved Legally Blonde really is.
