Here’s how Scream 4 co-star Alison Brie ranks the classic horror franchise. The 1980s was a particularly busy decade for horror movies, but moving into the 1990s, audience appetite for the genre waned. Outside of the occasional major success like Francis Ford Coppola’s Dracula, horror movies tended to underperform or received little exposure. Wes Craven’s Scream helped turn that tide in 1996, with the movie working as a suspenseful slasher, an involving mystery and a witty, meta-reflection on horror cinema.

Scream was both critically acclaimed and an unexpected box-office smash. The movie’s self-aware script would inspire later slasher outings like Urban Legends, and it also received two direct sequels in 1997 and 2000. Scream 3 was billed as the last chapter in a trilogy – which was actually a plot point in the movie – but, of course, Ghostface would eventually return for 2011’s Scream 4. This, sadly, would prove to be the final movie for director Wes Craven, who passed in 2015. Ready Of Not helmers Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett are taking over for Scream 2022, AKA Scream 5.

Scream 4 received a mixed reception initially, but over the years, it has been reassessed as a more than worthy sequel. Scream 4 – which cut its best Scream reference – also featured a small but fun supporting role for Alison Brie, who at the time was best known for Community. Alison Brie’s Scream 4 role was Rebecca Walters, the publicist for Sidney Prescott on her book tour. Rebecca’s personality drew comparisons to a young Gale Weathers, but she had little sympathy for Ghostface’s new victims and was eventually killed herself. In a 2020 chat with Collider, Brie also shared her personal Scream franchise ranking.

Alison Brie believes that the original Scream is the best, followed by Scream 4, Scream 3, and Scream 2. The latter sequel coming in so low is slightly surprising, as Scream 2 is generally regarded as one of the series’ best. Brie doesn’t seem to be a fan, however, and believes Scream 3 – often considered the weakest – is the better choice. The actor also admits she might be slightly biased towards it, but she thinks Scream 4 is the best sequel and agrees it’s somewhat underrated.

Alison Brie’s Scream 4 role may not have been very large, but the Collider interview makes it clear she’s a big fan of the series. Time will tell where Scream 2022 ranks in the series overall, especially being the first outing not directed by Wes Craven. The sequel also seems to be aiming for a darker, less comedic tone in the last two outings, which may bring it closer to the original Scream.
