Tim Burton and Michael Keaton never got around to making Beetlejuice 2, but a fan-made trailer offers a glimpse at what it might’ve been. Beetlejuice is one of those movies that always seemed destined for a sequel, and the fact it never got one is kind of astonishing. Released in 1988, the creepy comedy was a hit with critics and a box office smash, becoming the 10th highest-grossing film of the year.

Beetlejuice‘s popularity hasn’t waned in the decades since it came out either, with the titular character and his crazy world remaining iconic in the history of pop culture, and being merchandised in just about every possible way. Beetlejuice has starred in cartoons, video games, comic books, and even a stage musical adaptation of Burton’s film. All the while, rumors of Beetlejuice 2 have popped up over and over since the rise of the internet, continually getting fans hopes up only to end up going nowhere.

First, a note, the above trailer embed is a re-upload. The original version, created and uploaded by Tommy Ross, has since been removed from YouTube for reasons not entirely clear. Still, the embed seen above is the same fan trailer, just without Ross’ watermark. With that out of the way, like most fan-made trailers, it makes use of clips from other films and TV shows – as well as some material from the original Beetlejuice – to try and construct a potential narrative for Beetlejuice 2. For what it is, it’s quite well done, and it’s easy to see why other fans dug it.

As for a real Beetlejuice 2, Tim Burton has been kicking around the project since the early 1990s, It was originally set to be titled Beetlejuice Goes Hawaiian, and send the ghost with the most to a tropical paradise. Burton, Michael Keaton, and Winona Ryder were all attached at various points, but Burton kept getting distracted with other projects. Beginning in 2011, every few years has seen a few updates on Beetlejuice 2 hit the web, some hopeful, and some dire. As of 2019 though, Warner Bros.’ aforementioned statement seemed to squash the idea completely. For now, it’s definitely not showtime.
