Jeffrey Dean Morgan, who played the Comedian in the Watchmen movie, dons his old mask and hopes for a 2020 comeback. Writer Alan Moore and artist Dave Gibbons brought the Watchmen characters to life in the comic book world in 1986, releasing a 12 issue story that was eventually a single volume issue in 1987. The gritty comic book tale told the story of men and women who have been wearing costumes to fight crime since the 1930s. Characters like the Comedian, Silk Spectre, Nite Owl, Doctor Manhattan, and Ozymandias were some of the more important personalities leading the story.

In 2009, director Zack Snyder brought the characters to life in a live-action film adaptation of Moore’s comics, starring Jackie Earle Haley, Patrick Wilson, and Jeffrey Dean Morgan. In fact, in Snyder’s film, the death of Morgan’s Comedian is essentially the catalyst for the film’s narrative. Unfortunately, the live-action film only managed to collect over 185 million at the box office against a budget of 130 million. However, HBO’s Watchmen TV show is having much better luck. Damon Lindelof has made the show a sequel to the original comics, and it is set over thirty years after those events, meaning a lot of signature characters have either perished or disappeared. But the show’s story hasn’t deterred the Comedian from being hopeful of a return in 2020.

In a Twitter post from the Watchmen film’s Comedian, Morgan, posted a rather amusing image of himself in the Comedian mask, while still wearing his “bifocals,” and he jokingly hinted at a “masked comeback” in 2020. Along with the image, it says: “Gus found the comedian mask. Still fits like a glove. And looks extra extra with my badass bifocals. Here’s to a masked comeback in 2020.”

Currently, Morgan might be a tad preoccupied with another little show called The Walking Dead, where he plays one of the lead characters Negan. Also, considering the early death of the Comedian in Snyder’s film, and the timeline of the current TV show. A return for the Comedian seems unlikely. Plus, the fate of Lindelof’s Watchmen is still unknown as there has been no confirmation of a season 2 as of yet.

Although Morgan is having a little fun with his Twitter post, and for the reasons already mentioned, a return for his character in Watchmen does seem farfetched. But considering the twists and turns in the show, and the fact that Doctor Manhattan saves the Comedian at the last minute and transports him to Earth-Prime in the Doomsday Clock comic series, a return for the Comedian may not be impossible. After all, do comic book characters ever truly die and never return?
