Is a sequel to the cult 2013 horror movie We Are What We Are still being developed? Jim Mickle has made some distinct, character-driven genre movies over the last decade. This includes the post-apocalyptic Stake Land, which felt like a surprisingly successful blending of John Carpenter and Terrence Malick, and the 2014 thriller Cold In July. This starred Michael C. Hall as a man who kills a burglar in self-defense, with the latter’s father – played by the late Sam Shepard – seemingly stalking him in the aftermath.

Jim Mickle’s most recent project was the Netflix thriller In The Shadow Of The Moon. In 2013 he directed We Are What We Are, a remake of the Mexican movie of the same name; which on a side note, is something of a spinoff to Guillermo del Toro’s directorial debut Cronos. We Are What We Are follows an isolated, religious family called the Parkers, and the story slowly reveals the clan are cannibals, led by widower Frank (Bill Sage). Julia Garner – who plays Ruth on Ozark – and Ambyr Childers play his daughters Rose and Iris, while Jack Gore plays son Rory. The movie received largely positive reviews, praising its slow-burn pacing and performances, including supporting players like Kelly McGillis and the late Michael Parks.

Without diving into spoilers, We Are What We Are ends on a note that could lead to a sequel – but is one going to happen?

A We Are What We Are Prequel AND Sequel Were Confirmed In 2013

We Are What We Are seemed primed to become a trilogy, when in May 2013 both a prequel and sequel were announced. Mickle wouldn’t be directing either movie, with Finnish director AJ Annila set to helm prequel What We Were. This would have been an origin story, detailing the romance between Frank Parker and his wife Emma, and how the former introduces cannibalism into their love story.

In a cool twist Jorge Michel Grau – who helmed the original We Are What We Are – was also set to helm the untitled sequel.

The We Are What We Are Sequel Would Have Been Set In Mexico

In a 2013 chat with Ryan Turek from Shock Till You Drop, Jim Mickle revealed the idea for We Are What We Are’s sequel. In a brief tease, he revealed the sequel was moving the film’s surviving characters down to Mexico, likely meaning the Parker kids would be getting up to more cannibal mischief.

The We Are What We Are Follow-Ups Likely Aren’t Happening Anymore

While both We Are What We Are follow-up projects seemed to be gearing up, with the sequel reportedly on track for a 2014 shoot, nothing has been heard in the years since. The filmmakers involved has since moved on to other projects, while Julia Garner and Ambyr Childers have since become bigger names, which means luring them back for a sequel now may prove tricky

Given the time that’s passed and the lack of updates, it appears the We Are What We Are prequel and sequel won’t be happening.
