Wellington Paranormal creator Jemaine Clement provides a vague expectation of when seasons 3 and 4 will premiere in the US. The deadpan comedy series out of New Zealand is a spinoff of the successful What We Do in the Shadows show (season 4 coming soon) and created by the same filmmakers, Clement and Taika Waititi. It follows the exploits of two Wellington police officers who investigate paranormal phenomena in the city, both of whom make brief cameos in the original What We Do in the Shadows film that inspired both series.

While What We Do in the Shadows has become a critically-acclaimed and popular comedy series in the West, no doubt somewhat attributable to the cult status of the preceding film, Wellington Paranormal has enjoyed far quieter success, primarily in and around its native country. This disparity could be due to the smaller scale of Wellington’s production and toned-down humor, among other things. Like Shadows, the showrunners present Wellington Paranormal in a mockumentary fashion and feature slow-witted protagonists Minogue (Mike Minogue), O’Leary (Karen O’Leary), and Sergeant Maaka (Maaka Pohatu) as they confront new and insane occurrences every episode. Unlike Shadows, Wellington Paranormal has had a staggered release schedule in the US, seasons 1 and 2 arriving on HBO Max and The CW after their premiere in New Zealand.

Fans of the show have been wondering when seasons 3 and 4 would air in the US, and Jemaine Clement took to Twitter to answer that question… vaguely. According to the show’s creator, “Seasons 3 and 4 will be on HBOMax and The CW in…. a couple of months?” He clarifies that seasons 1 and 2 are already on those platforms but could not give a firm date for the others. Wellington Paranormal officially predates the Shadows series, airing in July 2018 on TVNZ 2 in New Zealand. Due to contractual obligations with Shadows partner network FX, Clement and Waititi could not secure international distribution for Wellington Paranormal outside of New Zealand and Australia until three years later. Even though Clement is uncertain about the release date of seasons 3 and 4 in the US, a summer airing would be consistent with The CW and HBO Max’s release in summer 2021, and fans would still be receiving another two seasons of content.

Understandably, however, fans are impatient. Wellington Paranormal’s season 3 first aired toward the beginning of 2021, well before the WarnerMedia acquisition that gave subscribers seasons 1 and 2, so the omission was undoubtedly confusing. If FX’s non-distribution clause was no longer in effect, season 3 could have rapidly joined the other seasons on those platforms, but the extensive legal factors are unclear. Season 3, in particular, was put on hold, likely due to COVID-19 filming restrictions, and season 4 only just premiered in New Zealand, so those could be contributing factors to the year delay. Regardless, audiences will soon be able to watch Wellington Paranormal seasons 3 and 4, which appear to be the show’s final seasons as Clement and Waititi prepare to film a new project altogether.
