A new video reveals the first look at Aaron Paul’s Caleb, the Man in Black, Maeve, and Bernard in Westworld season 4. HBO’s mind-bending sci-fi series is loosely based on Jurassic Park author Michael Crichton’s 1973 film of the same name which finds guests visiting a futuristic Western-themed amusement park containing lifelike androids that unexpectedly malfunction. The Westworld series hails from showrunners Lisa Joy and Jonathan Nolan, the brother and frequent collaborator of the famous filmmaker, Christopher Nolan.

Since its premiere in 2016, HBO’s cerebral series has famously confused viewers while also receiving heaps of praise from critics, scoring a total of 54 Primetime Emmy nominations and 9 wins. Since season 1 started out in its titular amusement park, the show has slowly ventured further and further outside the park with each season as the humanoid robots known as hosts have gradually gained consciousness. In fact, season 3 abandoned the Wild West theme park premise entirely and transitioned to a dystopian world dominated by an omnipotent artificial intelligence system known as Rehoboam.

Season 4 of Westworld is set to pick up there and now, the first official look at the next installment is here. A sizzle reel from HBO Max showcasing its entire 2022 slate contains a few brief shots from the upcoming season, including one of Maeve (Thandiwe Newton), a look at Bernard (Jeffery Wright) from behind, Caleb’s (Aaron Paul) new look, and the Man in Black (Ed Harris) who will return in some way. Though this video does not offer much in terms of plot details, it does confirm the return of the Man in Black, aka William, who was seemingly killed during season 3’s post-credits scene at the hands of the Charlotte Hale-clone (Tessa Thompson) that has been implanted with the Dolores’ (Evan Rachel Wood) consciousness. Of course, that doesn’t eliminate the possibility that the Man in Black could return in host form. Bernard’s return is also an intriguing one, as another post-credits scene revealed he is likely in a future timeline.

First introduced in season 3, Caleb now seems to be stepping up as the show’s central character, possibly taking over for Dolores. It was previously confirmed that Caleb will cross paths with Charlotte in season 4, one of the only plots teased for the upcoming installment. Westworld has aired a new season every two years since its debut in 2016 and even with the COVID-19 pandemic causing some setbacks, they should be able to stick to that schedule. With that in mind, Westworld season 4 will premiere sometime in 2022.
