The Ant-Man 3 title has been revealed as Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania, which could have implications for not only the Marvel Cinematic Universe but the film’s villain as well: Kang the Conqueror. It seems Marvel’s movie titles are only getting longer and longer, but that could be for good reasons with Quantumania.

Whereas discussion of the Quantum Realm was foreign to audiences and Scott Lang alike in Ant-Man and the Wasp, leading to one of the film’s best running gags, many years have passed since then. Avengers: Endgame catapulted Lang back into reality five years after the events of Ant-Man and the Wasp, and the film’s time-traveling antics were made possible by Lang’s familiarity with the Quantum Realm. With even more time under his belt, it’s safe to say that Lang, as well as the audience, will be even more immersed in quantum physics in Quantumania, just as the insane title suggests.

The Ant-Man 3 title Quantumania surely suggests an extravaganza of quantum-related craziness. The title is almost certainly meant to evoke the word “quantomania,” which refers to the act of focusing on countable or measurable entities to the exclusion of other factors. “Quantomania” may just sound like a fancy word that only scientists and researchers use, but its definition could offer some interesting insights into what the third Ant-Man film might look like.

Kang the Conqueror has been confirmed as the villain for Quantumania and he may prove to be much more than a nemesis for Ant-Man, seeing as Kang is commonly regarded as an enemy of the whole Avengers team, not to mention the Fantastic Four. Kang is a time-traveler himself and possesses power and intellect on a cosmic scale. Because Kang will likely arrive from the future, perhaps even with Loki’s help, he could be the “excluded factor” that “quantomania” refers to. It’s unclear what shape Lang’s work with the Quantum Realm will take in Quantumania, but it’s possible that his research will include a huge blind spot, one he couldn’t possibly have accounted for: Kang the Conqueror.

Of course, this interpretation of the film’s title relies on the title’s connection with a highly similar yet fairly unknown term. Still, it’s safe to say that Ant-Man 3 will engage with quantum mechanics more than any MCU film before it, and a title like Quantumania ensures all the absurdity and unpredictability associated with the topic. While previous Ant-Man films have been mostly self-contained adventures, their events have ultimately had huge ripple effects, making them arguably some of the most essential films in the MCU canon. With Ant-Man 3 introducing a big-time villain in Kang the Conqueror, and further explaining what time-travel and the multiverse may look like in MCU’s Phase 4, the film may prove to be yet another integral piece of the MCU’s broader tapestry.
