DICE’s Battlefield 5 took gamers to the frontlines of World War 2. The latest Battlefield 6 rumors suggest the new release will transport players to a near-future setting with advanced weaponry and technology, like robots and drones. The first-person shooter series has tackled various time periods throughout its 19 years of existence, but which of the Battlefield games featured the biggest map?

Battlefield has become known for its destructible environments and dynamic landscapes, and DICE has honed in on its map design as one of the main selling points of the series. Its most recent release included large-scale destruction of buildings and structures, which could harm footsoldiers caught in the falling debris. Players’ characters also moved differently depending on the terrain they find themselves on. World design and the ability to let players alter the environment have been central pillars of Battlefield‘s campaign and multiplayer for years. Even so, the largest map the series has ever released came as part of an additional game mode added after the November 2018 release of Battlefield 5.

DICE added a battle royale mode to Battlefield 5 in March 2019, titled Firestorm, which introduced the franchise’s largest map ever, Halvøy. The vast landscape features various terrains – like snowy villages and rocky, sea-side outposts – and changing weather systems that can hinder travel and obscure vision. Halvøy packs all of the Battlefield‘s defining traits into one massive landscape, but just how big is the battle royale’s map?

Battlefield’s Biggest Map: Halvøy

Before the release of Firestorm and Halvøy, the Hamada map was Battlefield 5‘s largest destination. Set in Northern Africa, the sun-baked area allowed up to 64 players to play everything from Conquest to Team Deathmatch. DICE revealed that the battle royale map was 1.5 kilometers long (just shy of 1 mile long) from its two most distant points, which isn’t anything special for today’s open-world and battle royale standards. The developer seriously upped the ante with the Norwegian map Halvøy, making it ten times larger than Hamada.

DICE hasn’t revealed the exact dimensions of Halvøy, but Redditor Milekill1 estimated that the battle royale’s map is 12 square kilometers (4.6 square miles). Firestorm only allows for 64-players lobbies, which is substantially less than the traditional 100-player games popularized by Fortnite. That might seem like a lot of ground to cover, but Battlefield 5 Firestorm‘s ring of fire steadily makes the map smaller and smaller as the game goes on to encourage players to fight each other until the last one is standing. Battlefield 6 remains a mystery, but DICE might be planning on introducing an even larger map in the next chapter of its FPS.
