AMC’s Into the Badlands ended in May 2019, so what has the series’ star Daniel Wu done since then? For three seasons, Daniel Wu starred as Sunny in the post-apocalyptic martial series. Daniel Wu’s Sunny was a highly trained fighter who originally worked as a “Clipper” — or professional killer — for Baron Quinn (Marton Csokas) before breaking away from his master to protect the people he cared about, including his love interest, Veil (Madeleine Mantock), and later, his son Henry. Into the Badlands ended with Sunny being asked to rise up and become a hero, but the show’s cancellation kept his new journey from ever being explored.

Interestingly, Wu was never supposed to star in Into the Badlands in the first place. Wu, who had a background in kung fu, was originally set to serve as the martial arts director for the show, but plans changed when no other actors were found for the part of Sunny. After taking the starring role, Wu continued acting in other projects and appeared in big budget Hollywood movies such as Warcraft, Geostorm, and Tomb Raider, which also featured fellow Into the Badlands star and Bajie actor Nick Frost.

Now that Into the Badlands is over, Daniel Wu has two upcoming projects. The actor is set to appear alongside Hugh Jackman and Rebecca Ferguson in Reminiscence, a sci-fi thriller that takes place in the future. Jackman plays a private eye who helps people relive old memories, while Wu will portray the main antagonist of the movie. The movie has been described as a “mind bending noir love story.” Reminiscence began filming in October, and no release date has been set.

Also, Daniel Wu will be appearing in Caught in Time, a Chinese heist movie about a detective tasked with hunting down a dangerous gang of criminals. Wu has top billing in the film, and based on the teaser trailer, it would seem that Wu is portraying one of the gangsters. The film is expected to be released in Hong Kong and China at some point in 2020.

Wu’s role in Caught in Time is a bit of a return to the actor’s roots. In the late 1990s and 2000s, Wu built his career on starring roles in a long list of Hong Kong and Chinese movies. His biggest being 2007’s Protégé, which he made with the celebrated Hong Kong director, Derek Yee, with whom he has worked with in multiple films. During his career making Hong Kong and Chinese movies, Wu also acted work with big names in the industry like Stephen Chow and Jackie Chan. It’s not clear what Wu will do next after Into the Badlands or if he will return to the martial arts genre, but if Reminiscence and Caught in Time are any indication, Wu may continue making movies in Hollywood and China.
