There are almost always new characters being added to Genshin Impact, allowing players to expand their rosters and get better fighters on their teams. Although the game gives out a few starter characters for free in the main story, and a few have been offered as event rewards, most characters must be acquired through the gacha-pull Wish system. Thankfully, a pity system in Genshin Impact means players are guaranteed a 5-star character or weapon after enough unsuccessful tries.

Certain characters are offered outside of Wishes through events, like the free Diona event currently underway, but the best characters in Genshin Impact will need to be obtained through the Wish system. Wishes can be made by using Fates, or – more commonly – by using Primogems. Since it takes 160 Primogems to make a single Wish, this can get somewhat grindy and can result in players spending real money in order to purchase more in-game currency.

Thankfully, Genshin Impact has a pity system to offer unlucky players guaranteed 5-star characters and weapons if they’ve had a lot of unsuccessful previous pulls. This is great, because it offers players a 100% chance of getting a great character or weapon once enough attempts have been made. And for players who want to test their luck before actually trying, a Genshin Impact Wish Simulator also exists.

What Genshin Impact’s Pity System Pull Rates Are

Typically, a 5-star character in Genshin Impact has a pull rate of about 0.6%. Banner characters, however, have a slightly boosted pull rate, which is why Banner reruns for characters like Venti and Zhongli are so important. Pity occurs in standard and limited-time character Banners on the 90th pull. So, if players go 89 turns without getting a 5-star character, they will have a 100% guaranteed chance to get a 5-star character on the next Wish.

Pity occurs just a bit earlier in the weapons Banners, allowing players to get a guaranteed 5-star weapon on their 80th pull if they have had 79 previously unlucky attempts. However, some players in Genshin Impact have noted that a “soft pity” system also seems to be in play, since many people report getting a 5-star Banner character like Zhongli or Ganyu closer to their 75th attempt. However, this “soft pity” system has not been officially mentioned by developer miHoYo the way the normal pity system has.

Genshin Impact is a gacha game at heart, which means pulling characters and weapons through its Wish system is often necessary. However, thanks to the pity system, players have a guaranteed chance of getting 5-star characters and weapons – even if they’re a bit unlucky.
