[WARNING: Spoilers for The Last of Us: Part 2 below]

Dina is a new character introduced in The Last of Us: Part 2, and even though she has a substantial role in the game, little is known about her backstory. The game provides only minor details to provide insight into what Dina’s life was like before she made it to the Jackson county settlement, but from the sounds of it, she went through a lot of pain and heartbreak.

At the start of The Last of Us: Part 2’s plot, it’s implied that Dina has been living at the settlement for several years, as Jesse reveals they broke up after multiple years together. Dina seems well-established at the settlement, having many friends. It’s also implied that she and Ellie have known each other for a number of years as well before the events of the game start to unfold.

[FINAL WARNING: Spoilers for The Last of Us: Part 2 below]

When Dina heads off into the unknown at the end of The Last of Us: Part 2, many players likely wondered where she may have ended up or if she had any family to turn to. Given the few details the character provides about what her life was like growing up post-infection, it doesn’t sound like that was an option.

Dina Mentions Her Family Briefly In The Last Of Us 2

Very little information is disclosed about Dina’s family or her life before arriving at the Jackson County settlement in The Last of Us: Part 2, but the character does briefly make reference to her past during several clips of dialogue between her and Ellie. In one scene, Dina revealed she lived in New Mexico for a time with her mother and sister. She also described one of the main factions her family encountered during their time there – the Ravens. The group shares similarities to The Last of Us: Part 2’s WLF as well as the hunters in Pittsburgh that Joel and Ellie encounter in the first game. Dina explains the Ravens consists primarily of former FEDRA members who challenged the military and FEDRA for control of New Mexico’s quarantine zones.

This isn’t the only time Dina references her family. During another conversation with Ellie while en route to Seattle’s downtown, the girls discuss the first time they ever had to kill someone. Ellie recalls the moment she had to save Joel from a soldier when she was only 14. In the first game, the teen had to grab Joel’s gun while he was on the brink of death and take her first life. Dina shared her own experience, explaining the first person she ever killed had tried attacking her mother, and she did it in self-defense.

Unfortunately, The Last of Us: Part 2’s story fails to inform players what exactly happened to Dina’s family. Since she seems to mainly talk about them in past tense, however, it seems to be implicit that something grave happened to them. At the very least, they don’t seem to be a part of Dina’s life anymore.

Players can also find a note in Ellie and Dina’s farmhouse, presumably from Jesse’s mom, in which she says Dina and JJ always have a place back at Jackson County with them. If Dina had any living family that she could go to, it may not have prompted Jesse’s mother to make such a generous offer. It also seems to be implied that this is where Dina heads after she leaves the farmhouse upon Ellie leaving to hunt Abby. Even more, Ellie’s journal reveals that Jesse’s parents came to visit baby JJ, but never anything about Dina’s family.

Unfortunately, The Last of Us: Part 2 provides few details about there whereabouts of Dina’s family, but at least she has a support system back at Jackson County waiting for her.
