The mysterious planet Kamino will return in Star Wars: The Bad Batch – and here’s everything we know about this world’s fate after Star Wars: Episode II – Attack of the Clones. The Jedi Archives on Coruscant were supposed to contain the most complete repository of knowledge in the galaxy. When Obi-Wan Kenobi discovered the planet Kamino had been erased from the Archives in Attack of the Clones, he was understandably shaken; it suggested a Jedi Master had deliberately deleted all record of the world.

Kenobi headed to Kamino and swiftly learned this was a planet of cloners. Years ago, the Kaminoans had been commissioned to build a Clone Army by Jedi Master Sifo-Dyas, presumably the man who amended the Jedi Archives. As revealed by Cavan Scott’s tie-in Dooku: Jedi Lost, Sifo-Dyas had been unusually prone to Force visions, and he had foreseen a time when the galaxy would be embroiled in war. Unfortunately the Sith learned he intended to create a Clone Army to save the Republic, and they manipulated Sifo-Dyas before killing him. The Clone Army became a key part of Darth Sidious’ plan, with the Kaminoans persuaded to add obedience programming so they would ultimately turn on the Jedi.

Kamino appeared in Star Wars: The Clone Wars, which revealed the Republic continued to commission clones from the Kaminoans. The Republic considered Kamino key to the war effort, and consequently protected it behind a 13-ship blockade; the Separatists actually managed to break through at one point, though, and fighting even wound up taking place on the planet’s surface. Fortunately Jedi Masters Anakin Skywalker and Obi-Wan Kenobi were dispatched to protect Kamino, and their military genius proved sufficient to the task.

Another key arc in Star Wars: The Clone Wars saw the defective Clone Trooper Tup sent to Kamino for inspection after he killed his Jedi General. His actions were due to a fault in his control chip, which had prematurely initiated his Order 66 programming, and the Kaminoans went to incredible lengths to conceal the truth. They believed this was a failsafe to protect the Republic in the event of a Jedi rebellion, and had no idea they were being manipulated by the Sith.

Kamino’s ultimate fate was explored in the old Expanded Universe, but those stories were rendered non-canon after Disney purchased Lucasfilm in 2012. The Disney era has avoided revealing what happened to Kamino in the Imperial Era, with dialogue in one comic confirming the clones had been decommissioned in favor of a recruitment operation. Still, there is some evidence the Empire learned key lessons about cloning from the Kaminoans, with the Imperial cloners in The Mandalorian wearing insignias of Kaminoan design. Hopefully, that relationship will finally be explained in Star Wars: The Bad Batch.
