One of the most beloved and fun characters from New Girl was Max Greenfield’s Schmidt, who went from ladies’ man to caring (and a bit weird) husband and father, but what happened to him after the series ended? Created by Elizabeth Meriwether, New Girl followed Jess Day who, after a bad break up, moves into an all-guys apartment. Her personality and habits completely change the dynamics in the loft, but they all end up becoming family.

One of her roommates was Schmidt, a guy who paid a lot of attention to his appearance and constantly said offensive or cocky things, hence why his roommates created the “douchebag jar”. Schmidt eventually settled down and married Cece, Jess’ best friend, after a lot of ups and downs and other relationships in between. The final season of New Girl was short but did a good job in bringing closure to the main characters, and Schmidt’s storyline was one of the most interesting and fun to watch.

Schmidt went from being the main contributor to the aforementioned jar and playing with people’s feelings to being a family man. Cece and Schmidt married at the end of New Girl season 5, bought a house the next season, and by the end of it they learned that Cece was pregnant. New Girl‘s final season had a time jump of three years, showing that Schmidt left his job as a marketing associate to become a stay-at-home dad. In the episode “Godparents”, Schmidt went back to work and Cece stayed at home with their daughter, Ruth, only for him to realize that his new job was now next to Ruth. So, did he really change marketing for his parental duties?

Although Schmidt showed his love for his job throughout the series, he went through some character development on the last seasons, so he most likely stayed at home with Ruth after New Girl ended, possibly until she didn’t need to have a parent around. However, the flash-forward in the last episode showed Cece and Schmidt have another son (Moses), so he probably stayed at home with him like he did with Ruth. And, of course, he kept a close relationship with Jess & Nick and Ally & Winston, as the three families are seen enjoying a kid-friendly round of True American.

Schmidt had a number of pet peeves and quirks that came in handy sometimes, like his tendency to organize everything around the house and his extreme hygiene when cooking, which also added to his character, making him relatable and bringing balance to his relationship with Cece, who was more carefree. Although some of his most notable quirks remained the same, the writers of New Girl made sure he had some development, and seeing him as a family man at the end was very satisfying.
