What Happened To The Mandalorian’s Jetpack? Chapter 14’s Weirdest Moment

Din Djarin (Pedro Pascal) seemingly left his jetpack on Tython in The Mandalorian season 2, episode 6. Mando continued his quest to reunite Baby Yoda with the Jedi in the latest episode of the Star Wars series, which is appropriately titled “The Tragedy.” Per Ahsoka Tano’s (Rosario Dawson) instructions, Mando brought Grogu to the planet Tython, where the Child was put on top of a rock that could help him choose his path moving forward, and to reach out to other Jedi who might want to take him in. Unfortunately, Mando was distracted by two sets of intruders, the first one being Boba Fett (Temuera Morrison) who was first spotted in Tatooine in The Mandalorian season 2 premiere.

Following the confirmation that the classic Star Wars character indeed survived his fall into the Sarlacc pit, there was always the expectation that he was going to re-appear in The Mandalorian. Several episodes later, he did, alongside Fennec Shand (Ming-Na Wen) who is now working with him after he saved her in The Mandalorian season 1. Boba Fett only wanted to reclaim his Mandalorian armor from Din, but both were hostile to one another during their initial meeting. Eventually, both decided to put their gear down, with Boba Fett specifically asking Din to remove his jetpack. Mando did so, but even after they reached a truce, he never put it back on.

Awarded by the Armorer (Emily Swallow) in The Mandalorian season 1 finale, Din’s jetpack proved to be useful in his recent adventures. It was instrumental in the defeat of the Krayt dragon in Tatooine; it helped him in tricky settings like his initial encounter with Bo-Katan Kyrze (Katee Sackhoff) and in the scouring of the Imperial base in Nevarro. In the latest episode, it helped him and Baby Yoda travel to the temple ruins fairly quickly from where they landed the Razer Crest. Considering how his jetpack not only made things much easier and in some instances, even possible, it’s odd that Din didn’t think of grabbing it quickly after the threat of the Imperial remnants became clear. Granted that they were ambushed, but it wouldn’t take that long for him to grab it; if he did, he might have been able to get to Grogu quicker as he didn’t have to manually climb the hill with Fennec.

After Baby Yoda was abducted by Moff Gideon’s (Giancarlo Esposito) Dark Troopers and the Razer Crest was destroyed, Din was left with no choice but to go with Boba Fett, who wished to keep his promise that in exchange for reclaiming his armor, he will ensure Din and Grogu’s safety. Granted that The Mandalorian didn’t show him leaving Tython, but it appears that he left his jet pack on the planet, since he showed up at Nevarro without it. The question now is whether or not this was purposefully done by the creative team behind the show.

For what it’s worth, the camera focused on Din actually putting the jetpack down, which could mean that the show wanted the viewers to remember that it was left there. Assuming that this was intentional, it’s more likely a set-up for Din’s eventual return to Tython. In the wake of losing both his surrogate son and his home, it’s possible that Mando may have simply forgotten to retrieve his jetpack in his haste to begin the quest to bring Grogu back.

Whatever the case may be with regard to Din’s jetpack, one thing is certain: he’s headed for a collision with Moff Gideon to save Baby Yoda without one of his most valuable gadgets. As previously mentioned, the jetpack allows him to do a lot of things, like easily traveling from one point to another, which could be very helpful considering that he’s going up against a full Imperial remnant cell backed up by Dark Troopers.
