The Titans season 3 trailer teases Jason Todd’s death, but does he actually die, and what happens to him in the comics? Quite a bit is changing in Titans going into season 3; not only has the series moved from DC Universe to HBO Max but there’s a whole host of new characters joining the fold, along with a change in scenery. The team seems to have left San Francisco behind to take the fight to Gotham City.

Of course, returning to Gotham means having an influx in Batman-related storylines, all of which begins with the apparent death of Jason Todd. The second Robin was famously killed off in the comics – by the Joker, no less – because people voted by phone to have the character written out. It all resulted in the acclaimed and controversial series Batman: A Death in the Family, which took its toll on Batman and radically reshaped his story, sending him down a darker path that continues to this day.

Now that storyline is being adapted for TV, with the Titans season 3 trailer showing Jason Todd entering a fairground and being attacked by a man, presumably Joker (if the series is sticking to the comics), wielding a crowbar. Next, a reporter says on the news that Robin had been killed. For all intents and purposes, Jason Todd seems to die in Titans season 3, as he does in the comics, but that’s not the end of his story; in the comics, he’s later resurrected as the antihero Red Hood, who’s also the show’s new antagonist.

Jason Todd does indeed die in DC Comics, but thanks to Ra’s Al Ghul and his Lazarus Pits (which can restore people’s youths), he’s resurrected, but with some abnormalities – at least in the animated continuity, which is decidedly less complicated and the route the HBO Max series appears to be taking. Though already aggressive, the Lazarus Pit made Jason Todd even more combative. He continues his war on crime – the war that Batman instilled in him – but without the same limitations. At this point in his story, he uses guns and freely kills criminals who stand in his way. It’s a remarkable turn and one that became a huge twist for DC. But it’ll be interesting to see how that all plays out in Titans, especially since there are already notable changes.

If Jason Todd dies, who will bring him back? Ra’s Al Ghul hasn’t been established in this universe yet, though one of the episode titles from season 3 does suggest the use of Lazarus Pits. Furthermore, Donna Troy is confirmed to return in season 3 in some capacity, so she will also need to be revived. It’s possible their stories will become intertwined without needing to introduce Ra’s Al Ghul nor Joker, since he’ll be needed to kill off Jason in the first place. However, regardless of where that story goes throughout season 3, Jason Todd’s death will become the impetus for more plot points throughout Titans, such as with the introduction of Tim Drake, Barbara Gordon, Scarecrow, and more.
