A new piece of fan art reimagines a live-action version of Paul Rudd’s Scott Lang from the Marvel Zombies episode of What If…? Marvel Studios’ first animated series explores alternate versions of key MCU decisions/events, which create parallel universes that run concurrently with the one fans know and love. For example, the series pilot episode saw Peggy Carter (Hayley Atwell) administered the super solider serum instead of Steve Rogers, while the Ravagers abducted T’Challa (Chadwick Boseman) instead of Peter Quill in episode 2.

Inspired by Marvel Comics’ Marvel Zombies, “What if… Zombies?!” saw Bruce Banner (Mark Ruffalo) circa Avengers: Infinity War sent to an Earth where Hank Pym’s attempt to rescue his wife from the Quantum Realm resulted in a virus being brought from the Quantum Realm and spread among humanity, infecting many of Earth’s mightiest heroes. Accompanied by Doctor Strange’s Cloak of Levitation, Bruce teams up with Peter Parker (Hudson Thames), Hope van Dyne (Evangeline Lily), Bucky Barnes (Sebastian Stan), Okoye (Danai Gurira), and T’Challa (Boseman) to stop the outbreak and save the world. They eventually encounter Vision (Paul Bettany), who, among other things, used the Mind Stone to save Scott Lang (Rudd) from the infection. Unfortunately, all that’s left of Lang is his disembodied head.

Now, digital artist César on Instagram recently shared some art of Scott Lang sporting the Cloak of Levitation. This new poster of What If…? art depicts a live-action Paul Rudd’s head in a jar with a cape. Check it out below:

Despite episode 5’s grim concept, the headless Paul Rudd, in a jar, and floating thanks to Strange’s cape has proven one of its best (of many) gags. In line with pop culture’s obsession with reanimated corpses, “What If Zombies?!” was one of What If…?’s most anticipated episodes ever since it was first teased. Like every other episode of the series, episode 5 ended on a cliffhanger, presumably leaving the door open for further explorations of the MCU’s zombie-filled Earth. The recently-released mid-season trailer used clips from previous episodes, as well as some new footage, to tease what’s to come. Although there are only three episodes left in What If…? season 1, the show has already been renewed for a second season.

As Uatu the Watcher (Jeffrey Wright) continues to watch over the multiverse in What If…?, audiences continue to wonder if he’ll remain an impartial observer until the credits roll on season 1. Promotional material has teased the Guardians of the Multiverse, leading many to believe the series will somehow tie into the live-action projects. That being said, comic book author and industry insider Mark Millar has claimed that Marvel Studios may be developing a live-action adaptation of Marvel Zombies. However, the validity of this claim remains to be seen. Regardless, it would certainly be interesting to see the above fan art become an (alternate) reality. As for now, fans can catch the remainder of What If…?’s first season every Wednesday on Disney+.
