WARNING: Spoilers for Superman & Lois season 1, episode 12, “Through the Valley of Death.”

John Diggle’s Arrowverse tour continues as Superman & Lois season 1 became his latest stop while also teasing what’s next for his future. Oliver Queen’s story in the Arrowverse may be over, but that is not the case for some of the other Arrow characters. Following Green Arrow’s death, Diggle has continued to be part of the franchise, particularly this season across the other Arrowverse shows. Even before Crisis on Infinite Earths reshaped their continuity, Diggle had already established dynamics with some of the other heroes. Given the popularity of David Ramsey’s character, it is not shocking that all of the shows want to utilize Diggle in their own ways.

SCREENRANT VIDEO OF THE DAY

Ever since the Arrow series finale, viewers have been waiting to find out what is next for John Diggle, particularly his Green Lantern setup. Despite the Green Lantern plot not progressing as fast as some had hoped for, Diggle has been lending a hand to his fellow allies. The Flash season 7 has thus far been the most important one for Diggle’s Green Lantern storyline. As Diggle visited Superman & Lois in episode 12, “Through the Valley of Death,” however, the story didn’t do much to explain his mysterious headaches and hearing voices in his head.

Still, it allowed Diggle to interact a bit more with the Kent-Lane family. Similar to his appearance on Batwoman, Diggle’s visit to Smallville was fairly short. However, Diggle’s guest spot on Superman & Lois came with some crucial moments that may factor into his future Arrowverse future. Based on what went down in “Through the Valley of Death,” here’s what could be next for Diggle in the Arrowverse.

Diggle Rediscovering The New Arrowverse Multiverse

Ever since Crisis on Infinite Earths concluded with Earth-Prime being created, none of the Arrowverse heroes know what Oliver actually did as the Spectre. While they think Earth-Prime is the only world that survived the Crisis, Oliver managed to resurrect and reboot the Arrowverse Multiverse. Despite Earth-2 existing again, it is now the Earth designation for Stargirl, unlike the pre-Crisis version. As Diggle came to Smallville to help with their Superman problem, he got introduced to John Henry Irons. However, Diggle was quite shocked when he learned that John comes from another Earth.

Outside of Superman & Lois, Diggle is really the first major Arrowverse character that has learned that the Multiverse is, in one way or another, still alive. “Through the Valley of Death” showed a brief flashback of how John traveled from Earth to Earth-Prime. This implies that the events that happened in John’s world may have gone down after Crisis on Infinite Earths. Given Diggle’s reaction to John being from another universe, it would be out of character for him not to spread this information to the other heroes.

Diggle’s Possible Future Friction With General Lane

If there is one thing Arrowverse viewers have learned about Diggle, it is that he will not accept anyone’s nonsense. Whenever Diggle sees that someone is out of line or not being reasonable, he will always make his voice heard. That is what happened during his Superman & Lois visit, as Diggle wasn’t thrilled about General Sam Lane not being completely honest about what he intended to do with the ARGUS tech. While ARGUS has weapons and technology that can take down Superman, Diggle wasn’t aware of what Sam intended to do with it and made his displeasure known.

Diggle even stated that he and Lyla would not have agreed to help Sam had they known about the full picture in regard to Superman. By the end of Diggle’s Superman & Lois episode, he and Sam weren’t exactly on the best of terms. Given how crucial ARGUS is becoming within the Arrowverse, it would not be shocking if this is the beginning of the two characters having a frictional dynamic in the coming seasons. It is also possible that their relationship is something Superman & Lois season 2 will tackle if Diggle returns next year.

Diggle Getting Closer To Finally Become A Green Lantern

Even though Superman & Lois was a short visit for Diggle, it may still have impacted his future Green Lantern storyline in the Arrowverse. Diggle insisted that he is done with the superhero life, not wanting anything to do with green alien boxes, doppelgängers, and losing people he loves. However, as shown on The Flash, Diggle declared to Barry that he would tackle this problem after the headaches and voices got worse. Despite not having much to do with the overall plot, it’s hard to picture Diggle walking away from his life as a hero. It would especially be a weird direction for Diggle after he saw what can happen to someone as powerful as Superman.

While Diggle has his upcoming episode in Supergirl season 6, it might be the final step for him to accept the invitation to become a Green Lantern. Diggle has always been a character that stands for good and wanting to help the world, even when it might cost him his life. As Diggle has traveled from Gotham City, Central City, Smallville, and soon National City, his episodes imply that he can’t retire from the hero gig completely. Having seen the corruption in Gotham City, the Godspeed war, and how Superman could be turned, it is only a matter of time before Diggle stops rejecting his calling.

The Arrowverse has taken its time to get through Diggle’s Green Lantern plot; there is no denying on that front. However, it will be worth it if Diggle’s episodes of The FlashSuperman & LoisBatwoman, and Supergirl get him there. It could also be that the creators needed more time to figure out how to execute Green Lantern properly. It is, after all, a major chapter for Diggle as he spent eight years being the Green Arrow’s partner, so they may want to make sure it is handled correctly. Hopefully, Diggle’s appearance on Supergirl will give viewers that payoff, especially after Superman & Lois episode 12.
