A new piece of Marvel Cinematic Universe fan art imagines what Letterkenny creator/star Jared Keeso could look like as the Wolverine. Originally created by Marvel editor-in-chief Roy Thomas, Len Wein and John Romita Sr., James Howlett, also known as Logan/Weapon X/Wolverine, made his first appearance in the final panel of The Incredible Hulk No. 180 before taking a larger role in the following issue. The character is a mutant who possesses heightened senses akin to his namesake animal, enhanced physical abilities, a powerful regenerative ability and retractable claws in each hands, initially bones upon birth but made of adamantium following his imprisonment in the Weapon X program.

Wolverine is most notably associated with the X-Men, appearing in nearly all adaptations of the team across animated shows, video games and films, becoming most popular for Hugh Jackman’s portrayal of the character in 20th Century Fox’s X-Men franchise. This popularity would see Jackman lead multiple solo films beginning with the critically maligned X-Men Origins: Wolverine and getting progressively better with the generally well-received The Wolverine and the critically acclaimed finale Logan, which served as his final performance in the role. With Disney’s acquisition of Fox leading to the rights of the X-Men characters reverting back to Marvel Studios, many have been hopeful Jackman will reprise the role for the in-development MCU X-Men film, however as the actor has confirmed his retirement from the character, many have begun sharing their thoughts on the best replacement.

On the heels of Jackman confirming his retirement from the role, artist Andrew Hunt has taken to Instagram to share a new piece of fan art showing what Letterkenny‘s Keeso could look like as the Wolverine. Donning a long-sleeve shirt reminiscent of his sitcom character Wayne and leather jacket Jackman’s iteration of the character popularized, the art also features Keeso sporting the iconic hairstyle of the Marvel hero and smoking a cigar while a bloody set of claws protrude from one of his fans. Starting off as a YouTube channel before being developed into a show for Canadian network Crave, Letterkenny has proven to be a true hit with viewers in both the Great White North and the U.S., with Hulu having acquired the exclusive rights to the series in 2019 shortly after it began streaming the first two seasons and seeing a large viewership. Much of that success can be chalked up to Keeso, who is not only the star of the series but also its primary writer alongside co-developer/director Jacob Tierney. While Keeso has made supporting appearances in the world of film, including Elysium and Godzilla, it’s hard to deny Hunt’s art imagining him as Wolverine makes a pretty strong case for casting him in the role.

Fans of Letterkenny know the stature and fighting power Keeso brings to his role as Wayne but also his sardonic sense of humor, all of which Wolverine is well-known for both on page and on screen. Though Jackman has previously stated he would like to see Tom Hardy take over as Wolverine, the Oscar nominee’s commitment to the Sony Pictures Universe of Marvel Characters and Venom franchise — which may or may not be connected to the MCU — points towards an unlikelihood he would be able to carry both roles. Only time will tell whether Marvel will figure it out and cast Keeso in the role or go with another star to carry on the mantle.
