New fan art imagines what Matthew McConaughey’s Norman Osborn would look like with some Chitauri-style armor as the Green Goblin in the next MCU Spider-Man film. The Green Goblin character has been Spider-Man’s comic book arch-nemesis since the early days of the comics, and has remained a popular villain ever since. The first version was the evil alter-ego of industrialist Norman Osborn, but over the years, the mantle has also been taken on by his son, Harry, along with a few other characters from the comics.

On-screen, Green Goblin has been a popular villain choice for filmmakers, starting with Sam Raimi’s first Spider-Man movie, where he was played by Willem Dafoe. In the Raimi-directed sequels, James Franco’s Harry Osborn eventually took on the mantle. In Marc Webb’s The Amazing Spider-Man 2, Dane DeHaan also appeared as the Harry Osborn version of the Green Goblin. Now that Spider-Man, as played by Tom Holland, is part of the MCU, many have speculated whether the popular character will make an appearance in one of the future Holland-led Spider-Man films. That speculation has only increased after both Spider-Man: Homecoming and Spider-Man: Far From Home featured classic Spider-Man villains, albeit modernized ones, in The Vulture and Mysterio.

Now, digital artist Jackson Caspersz has created a piece of fan art that casts Matthew McConaughey in the role of the Green Goblin. Caspersz says he was inspired by an article he read in which McConaughey said he would like to play the iconic role. This take on the villain wears a Chitauri-inspired suit, referencing the villains from 2012’s The Avengers, as well as the storyline from Spider-Man: Homecoming, which saw Michael Keaton’s Vulture utilizing Chitauri technology to build his winged suit. You can see the fan art below:

@officiallymcconaughey as the Green Goblin head of the Sinister 6. I read an article saying that he would like to play Green Goblin so here we are. In terms of the suit design I wanted to have elements from the comic style cloth and chain mail but also mix it with some chitauri armor that we saw in Avengers. I think Norman Osbourne having such a huge company would be able to get his hands on it after the battle of NY and alter it to fit his goblin body. Let me know what you guys think 👍

Besides being incredibly stylish art, the piece is a fairly accurate rendering of what the Green Goblin could look like in the MCU. The addition of the Chitauri-style armor is a particularly nice touch, given that the Battle of New York has had a lasting impact on the MCU, and has influenced a number of its characters. Of course, where Keaton’s Vulture was using the armor in Homecoming to make himself wealthy, Osborn is wealthy enough to use it for more purely evil purposes. Just how the character could fit into the MCU, though, is still up for debate, given that he hasn’t been mentioned yet.

The thought of casting McConaughey in the role should also get fans excited. As a performer, the Texan has the right blend of charisma and darkness to pull off the role, and he could believably portray a much more modern version of the villain than the one Dafoe played in the 2002 Spider-Man film. Dafoe’s performance, while still memorable, played right into the campier aspects of the Raimi films, which the MCU has more or less steered away from up until this point. But whether the character does turn up in one of the coming Spider-Man films or not, this fan art certainly proves he would make an interesting adversary for Holland’s Spider-Man.
