The first trailer for Marvel’s Eternals has been released, and the song that plays through it has an interesting connection to Angelina Jolie – here’s what it is. The Marvel Cinematic Universe continues its expansion now that the Infinity Saga came to an end with Spider-Man: Far From Home, and this new era of content will focus on both movies and TV shows, bringing a lot more connections to this universe. The MCU’s Phase 4 will welcome back previously introduced heroes and will bring new ones to the mix, and the first newcomers will be the Eternals.

Directed by Chloé Zao, Eternals takes place after the events of Avengers: Endgame, and will see the title team – an immortal alien race created by the Celestials and who has been secretly living on Earth for thousands of years – reuniting to protect humanity from the Deviants, their evil counterparts. Starring as the Eternals are Gemma Chan, Richard Madden, Kumail Nanjiani, Lia McHugh, Brian Tyree Henry, Lauren Ridloff, Barry Keoghan, Don Lee, Salma Hayek, and Angelina Jolie, and the latter has an interesting connection to the song playing in the first trailer.

After what felt like a very long wait due to the coronavirus pandemic delaying the release of the movie, the first trailer for Eternals has arrived, and it helps set the audience in the context of these characters and their purpose on Earth. Playing through the trailer is the song “The End of the World”, written by Arthur Kent and Sylvia Dee for Skeeter Davis, the original performer of it. Davis’ version was a hit in the 1960s, reaching the top spots on different charts and making way for various versions, most notably that by The Carpenters in 1975, but the version you can hear in the Eternals trailer is that of Skeeter Davis along with a remix by Ramin Djawadi.

“The End of the World” is all about the aftermath of a breakup, with Lee explaining she drew on the sorrow from her father’s death to set the mood for it, and it’s that melancholic tone that has made it ideal for various movies and TV shows. Although not much is known about the plot of Eternals, the song says a lot about it, as the voiceover in the trailer explains that in all their years on Earth they had never had to interfere until now, in the aftermath of the return of those who vanished after Thanos’ snap, the Battle of Earth, Iron Man’s sacrifice and Steve Rogers’ retirement, these last two referenced in the trailer. The MCU came very close to the end of its world with Thanos’ snap and later the Battle of Earth, so the song is quite fitting for the introduction and intervention of the Eternals in the MCU.

Now, as mentioned above, “The End of the World” has been used on various TV shows and movies, and that’s where the connection with Angelina Jolie is. Jolie plays Thena in Eternals, a warrior who can form any weapon out of cosmic energy, and back in 1999, she played Lisa Rowe in James Mangold’s Girl, Interrupted, a role that gave her the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress. “The End of the World” also plays in Girl, Interrupted but in a very, very different context and with a completely different intention – and it’s found in the scene where Lisa and Susanna Kaysen (Winona Ryder) are waiting for Daisy (Brittany Murphy) to come down. Susanna goes upstairs to check on Daisy only to find that she killed herself in the bathroom, and left the song playing on a loop all morning. One song can have different meanings depending on how and where it’s used, and “The End of the World” is not only fitting to the tone of Eternals but also gives some clues on what to expect from it.
