What is the song that’s heard in the new trailer for the Sony-Marvel movie Morbius, and how does it relate to the movie itself and the Marvel characters in Morbius’ universe, like Rhino and Black Cat? Following on the heels of the October release of Venom: Let There Be Carnage, Morbius will be the second character in Sony’s universe populated by Marvel villains to headline a movie on theater screens (or the third, if Carnage is also counted). The COVID-19 pandemic has been particularly rough on Morbius with multiple delays stemming from it, but Marvel’s Living Vampire finally looks set to debut on January 28, 2022.

Jared Leto portrays scientist Michael Morbius, whose search for a cure for the blood disease he’s afflicted with brings him into contact with some very unusual vampire bats. Morbius soon discovers that not only is his disease cured, but he’s gained many bat-like superhuman abilities, along with a thirst for human blood. For a character with as much of a horror angle as Morbius, including his long connection to Blade, the song choice for the new Morbius trailer is quite fitting.

The song heard in the trailer is “People Are Strange” by The Doors, and this connects to both the themes of Morbius and the film’s relationship with the rest of Sony’s Spider-Man Universe, as it’s now known. Leto’s portrayal of Morbius himself presents the character as rather eccentric and a bit socially awkward, and the trailer could be setting Morbius up as something of a mad scientist in his quest to cure his blood disease with the methods he employs to do so. Then, of course, there’s the transformation Morbius undergoes that rids him of his disease while transforming him into a vampire.

For most people in the world of Sony’s Spider-Man Universe, meeting Morbius will be their first encounter with a vampire. From their perspective, he certainly fits the bill of a “strange“, superhuman person. Though Morbius in both his human and vampire stages could be viewed as strange (albeit to massively different degrees), the inclusion of “People Are Strange” in the trailer also doesn’t seem to refer exclusively to Morbius.

In the trailer, a knife-wielding assailant asks Morbius who he is after being disarmed, with Morbius replying “I…am…Venom“. Morbius then explains he’s kidding and reveals his real identity, but this is an obvious reference to the Venom movies, and indicates that Morbius will take place after Venom has become more publicly known in Venom 2, with the world more aware of the presence of monstrous superhumans. With other characters like Kraven the Hunter on the way and the sharp left turn of Venom 2‘s end-credits scene, Sony’s Spider-Man Universe is sure to have a growing population of “strange” people after Morbius debuts in theaters.
