Warning: SPOILERS ahead for AJ and the Queen season 1.

AJ and the Queen is a Netflix Original series following the adventures of Robert aka drag queen Ruby Red (RuPaul Charles) and his companion AJ (Izzy G), an obnoxious 10-year-old with street smarts and a chip on her shoulder. AJ and the Queen season 1 debuted on Netflix on January 10, 2020, and it ends in a dramatic cliffhanger — will RuPaul’s new show return for season 2?

Netflix’s AJ and the Queen features a full cast of colorful characters, including: Michael-Leon Wooley as Robert’s best friends, roommate, and fellow drag queen Louis aka Cocoa Butter; Josh Segarra as Hector, Robert’s too-good-to-be-true boyfriend who Robert discovers is a grifter; and Tia Carrere as Lady Danger, Hector’s partner-in-crime. With such a large cast, the show introduces quite a few storylines that are left dangling in the season 1 finale.

SCREENRANT VIDEO OF THE DAY

At the end of AJ and the Queen‘s season 1 finale, AJ has been reunited with her drug-addict mother Brianna, Robert has realized she wants to adopt AJ, and Louis aka Cocoa Butter has been crowned the first alternate for Miss Drag USA. Robert’s financial worries were somewhat rectified during the finale, but his story is no where near finished. Will viewers have the opportunity to see theses storylines reach a conclusion?

AJ and the Queen Hasn’t Been Renewed For Season 2 — Yet

Netflix has yet to renew AJ and the Queen, so there is no official indication of an upcoming season 2. However, given that the show only debuted in January 2020, there is still ample time for such an announcement. Netflix typically uses viewing figures in order to determine its renewal decisions, as well as critical reception. News about AJ and the Queen season 2 will likely be announced in February or March 2020.

AJ and the Queen Season 2 Release Date

The show received a series order in May 2018, but the cast was not officially announced until September 2018. If AJ and the Queen is renewed for a second season, it will likely release in early-to-mid 2021. The production schedule depends on RuPaul’s availability, as the AJ and the Queen star/writer/producer is involved in various other ongoing projects, including RuPaul’s Drag Race (season 13 is in casting in early 2020) and the highly-anticipated RuPaul’s Drag Race All Stars season 5.

AJ and the Queen Season 2 Story Details

The first season of AJ and the Queen follows the main characters AJ and “the Queen” Robert as they get to know each other. The drama of season 1 consists of the interpersonal tension between these two unlikely companions, as well as the danger posed by the criminals Lady Danger and Hector, who pursue the two travellers with the intent of “silencing” Robert (although their commitment to actually murdering the drag queen is admittedly questionable). While AJ and Robert are on the road, Louis is left behind in New York City dealing with his own drama with Officer Kennedy, and with Brianna, AJ’s negligent mother whom lived in the apartment above Robert and Louis before being evicted.

Season 1 ends with most of these storylines left up in the air: Louis walks in on Officer Kennedy and another man, and, understandably, storms off in anger. Season 2 may see the two reconcile. Brianna is reunited with AJ in the finale’s final scene, but it is clear that AJ is furious with her mother and Robert is heartbroken to see the 10-year-old go. The final moments of the finale suggest season 2 will be about Robert’s journey to reunite with AJ.

There were quite a few drag queen cameos in season 1 of AJ and the Queen; fans of RuPaul’s Drag Race will no doubt hope to see more of these queens in season 2. Latrice Royale, Ginger Minj, and Trinity the Tuck had guest roles in season 1; perhaps their characters will return in the subsequent season? Trinity the Tuck, who plays Danielle Dupri, was crowned Miss Drag USA in the finale, but her crown was stollen by Lady Danger. It would be interesting to see if this story will be continued in the next season’s arc.
