Hoops season 1 is packed with heavy profanity and rebellious characters, but the basketball element offers something new for Netflix subscribers, and also complements the NBA season. So, will there be a Hoopsseason 2? Based on the reviews so far, it seems like Netflix want a little more than the sophomoric humor on offer.

The Hoops season 1 storyline focuses on Ben Hopkins (Jake Johnson), a basketball guru at Lenwood High School in Kentucky. Like many hot-headed coaches, he acts out during games and talks trash to the referees. At school, Ben spews profanity in almost in every situation. It’s clear that Ben has several personal issues to address, and that basketball allows for a temporary break from everything bad in his life. Hoops season 1 co-stars Ron Funches as Ben’s best friend Ron and Natasha Leggero as Ben’s wife Shannon, who openly carry on a romantic relationship with each other.

In the Hoops season 1 finale, Ben lets everybody know about a recent sexual encounter with Shannon. The non-stop boasting foreshadows some bad news for the Lenwood High coach, and sets up the episode’s final moments when Ben decides to pursue a new opportunity. Here’s everything we know so far about Hoops season 2 on Netflix.

Hoops Season 2 Release Date Info

Netflix hasn’t yet ordered Hoops season 2. The adult sitcom debuted in full on August 21, 2020, so the streaming service will likely make a decision about the series’ future in October after looking at viewership data and reviews. Critics were definitely not impressed with Hoops season 1, but adult cartoons with brash protagonists who aren’t afraid to speak their mind often find an audience, so Hoops could yet prove to be a hit. If that’s the case, Hoops season 2 could probably be expected to release in summer or fall 2021.

Hoops Season 2 Story Details

Hoops season 1 ends with Ben accepting a position at Henderson Prep. He didn’t earn the job because of his workplace performance, but rather because he was able to convince the mother of seven-footer Matty (A.D. Miles) that her son should transfer and play hoops for a more prestigious school. At Lenwood High, Ben announces his decision to leave and subsequently hangs his jacket to commemorate his legacy, only to realize that he left his car keys in a jacket pocket. Ben is later confronted by his players, who create a human blockade in the street. The coach’s car then breaks down, which seems to foreshadow his future at Henderson Prep.

If Netflix does order Hoops season 2, expect Ben to spiral out of control with his hubris and lack of self-awareness. Because the supporting players in Hoops season 1 are mostly basketball players from Lenwood High, it seems that Ben will somehow return home, a la Ben Affleck’s Jack Cunningham in The Way Back, and try to begin anew with Shannon.
