Will Monsterland season 2 ever happen? If so, when will it release, and what will new episodes be about? Based on Nathan Ballingrud’s 2013 book, North American Lake Monsters: Stories, the original eight-part horror anthology series examines how fractured minds correlate with terrifying, thought-consuming creatures. Monsterland season 1 released in October 2020 on Hulu.

Monsterland season 1 features several big names from the entertainment industry. American actress Kaitlyn Dever (Unbelievable) headlines the series premiere, “Port Fourchon, LA”, portraying a young waitress named Toni, who embraces her dark side. Luke Cage actor Mike Colter stars in the season finale, “Newark, NJ”, as a father grieving the disappearance of his daughter, and Star Wars’ Kelly Marie Tran appears in “Iron River, MI” as a woman who adopts the persona of a former friend. Monsterland season 1 also includes heavy-duty performances from Nicole Beharie, Bill Camp, and Taylor Schilling, while Good Omens actress Adria Arjona portrays a mermaid who’s captured by a fisherman living in south Texas.

SCREENRANT VIDEO OF THE DAY

The collective episodes in Monsterland season 1 focus heavily on character psychology. Several installments have contained settings, which at once creates a claustrophobic feel while spotlighting the central performances. There isn’t one cohesive storyline that connects each episode, but the tales seemingly take place in the same universe. Here’s everything we expect for Monsterland season 2 on Hulu.

Monsterland Season 2 Renewal

Hulu hasn’t yet greenlit Monsterland season 2. The streaming service will most likely analyze viewing numbers for several weeks after the October 2020 premiere, then presumably make a decision by the end of the year. Monsterland season 1 has been well-received by critics, and horror fans mostly seem to enjoy the storytelling. It’s worth noting that Ballingrud hasn’t released a sequel to North American Lake Monsters: Stories, but trusts Hulu’s team of writers to provide their own spin on his source material, stating (via the Daily Hampshire Gazette“I went into the process knowing full well it would not just be a filmed version of my book. It’s a different medium, with different writers involved and a different way of storytelling.” Expect Hulu to greenlight Monsterland season 2 before Christmas 2020.

Monsterland Season 2 Release Date

Half of Monsterland season 1 was written by creator Mary Laws (The Neon Demon), and it’s safe to assume that she’s already conceptualizing future episodes. If Hulu already has a team of additional writers in place, filming could potentially take place during the late spring or early summer of 2021 and be completed relatively quickly (Monsterland season 1 was shot in one month). Due to this timeline, it’s possible that Monsterland season 2 will release in October 2021 for Hulu’s Halloween programming, just like Monsterland season 1 did.

Monsterland Season 2 Story

Monsterland season 2 will theoretically deconstruct human psychology once again. The original episodes were produced before the COVID-19 outbreak in North America, and the screenwriters will naturally consider tales about the new normal in modern society. For a more original approach, however, the Monsterland season 2 filmmakers may want to think outside-the-box for storylines that will allow audiences to drift away from their current reality. In that case, Monsterland season 2 on Hulu will explore the past and future, all the while underlining how characters are affected by various psychological factors in the present.
