WARNING: Spoilers for Paranormal season 1 ahead

Will Netflix move forward with Paranormal season 2? If so, when will it release, and what will it be about? The spooky Egyptian series has been well-received thus far due to its unique Arabic spin on familiar genre tropes. Based on Ahmad Khaled Towfeq’s eponymous novel franchise, Paranormal released in November 2020 to the streaming platform.

Set in 1960s Egypt, Paranormal season 1 stars Ahmed Amin as 40-year-old hematologist Refaat Ismail. The professor views himself as the unluckiest man in the world, and always expect the worst to happen. Refaat’s fear and paranoia stems from traumatic childhood experiences, and also from the ghost of a young girl named Shiraz, (Reem Abd El Kader) who haunts him as an adult. On top of that, the professor struggles to properly communicate his feelings, most notably with his wife, Huwaida, (Aya Samaha) and long-time friend, Maggie (Razane Jammal). After a series of unfortunate events from episode to episode, Paranormal season 1 on Netflix settles on a character study about a man trying to unlock the mysteries of his mind.

Refaat may indeed struggle with self-confidence in Paranormal season 1, yet he performs heroic tasks. The professor survives a bizarre mummy autopsy that leads to the death of several colleagues, and he confronts a rather large ape in a Libyan cave. But it’s not physical feats that make Refaat remarkable, it’s his ability to manipulate his subconscious, albeit through lots of lucid dreaming. Here’s everything we expect for Paranormal season 2.

Has Paranormal Been Renewed For Season 2?

Netflix hasn’t yet ordered Paranormal season 2. The streaming service typically makes renewal/cancellation announcements three to six weeks after new seasons release, so a decision will presumably be made by the end of 2020. There are a couple obstacles in the way of a renewal, as Paranormal season 1 could get lost in the shuffle of horror series or it may be perceived as too dark for casual streamers. Netflix isn’t in the business of renewing series with small, yet devoted followings (just ask fans of The OA), so Paranormal season 1 will need some word-of-mouth exposure and lots of press. We’ll predict that Netflix will green-light Paranormal season 2 by early 2021.

Paranormal Season 2 Release Date

Assuming that Netflix orders Paranormal season 2, new episodes will most likely release in 2022. Even if the series becomes a big hit, the release model will probably echo that of Black Mirror. In fact, Netflix may even choose to take an anthology approach with the series, as the source material doesn’t focus entirely on Refaat’s character. Expect Paranormal season 2 to release around Halloween 2022.

Paranormal Season 2 Cast

Amin will most likely reprise his role for Paranormal season 2 on Netflix. If the series does indeed focus on a different character, the professor can still be included as a narrator, just like in the source material. Aside from Amin, the aforementioned Jammal will presumably return as Maggie – the protagonist’s potential love interest – along with the character known as Louis.

Paranormal Season 2 Story Details

The penultimate episode of Paranormal season 1 on Netflix shows Refaat learning how to lucid dream. He views himself as the source of all troubles – especially after the death of his brother, Reda (Rushdi Al Shami) – and hopes to navigate the cerebral maze that is his brain. Paranormal season 1’s climax shows Refaat returning to a mansion where his mother worked decades prior, and discovering the real-life corpse of his ghost, Shiraz. The spirit speaks to the professor (through Maggie’s body), and reveals that she was trying to help him all along. Paranormal season 1 ends with Refaat receiving a letter from his college friend, Louis, who is presumably the walking embodiment of Lucifer himself, or maybe just playing a devious game with his friend.

Paranormal season 2 could be mostly about Refaat, or it could have the character narrate a story about someone else. For a chronological continuation, the narrative would presumably focus on the relationship between Refaat and Maggie, and eventually reveal the motivations of their college friend Louis, whose season 1-ending letter promises “no more games.”
