Stranger Things season 3 is one of the most anticipated releases of the year – but what can viewers expect with the upcoming season? Stranger Things took the world by storm when it released on Netflix back in 2016. The sci-fi horror series, created by Matt and Ross Duffer (aka the Duffer Brothers), continues to be a pop culture phenomenon and a love letter to the 1980s.

Over the course of two seasons of Stranger Things, viewers were taken on an emotional journey following a group of characters from Hawkins, IN. After the disappearance of young Will Byers, the introduction of the Upside Down, and the arrival of a girl with psychokinetic abilities, the town was forever changed. Those closely involved were quickly swept up in the supernatural happenings and dangerous mysteries plaguing the town. After dealing with the Demogorgon, Demodogs, and the Mind Flayer, it sure seems like the biggest challenge is yet to come.

As the arcs of the ensemble cast continue to interweave, the main threat will once again find a way to affect the entire town in Stranger Things season 3. Even though the first two seasons were great in their own ways, Stranger Things season 3 is considered the most ambitious yet. The creative team promises that the new chapter is even darker and more action-packed than previous seasons. It won’t be all doom and gloom, however, as Stranger Things season 3 is also inspired by the action-comedy Fletch.

Stranger Things Season 3 Release Date

Stranger Things season 3 releases on July 4, 2019. Fans across the globe will have the chance to enjoy Stranger Things season 3’s eight new episodes over the holiday weekend (in the US). Netflix typically releases original programming on Fridays, but this year they’re coordinating with the Fourth of July holiday. The streaming service is expected to follow their normal method in terms of release time – 3 a.m. ET/midnight PT (including corresponding time zones). But considering the hype surrounding Stranger Things season 3, it’s best to be prepared for any surprises.

Stranger Things Season 3 Story

Stranger Things season 3 takes place in the summer of 1985. Those in Hawkins are living a seemingly normal life a year after the Mind Flayer was sealed back into the Upside Down. Mike, Lucas, Will, and Dustin are leaving their adolescence behind as they are beginning to focus more on girls than Dungeons & Dragons. Changes are happening all over town with the construction of the Starcourt Mall and a brand new mayor.

After the disappearance of the lifeguard, more mysteries start to resurface. Stranger Things season 3’s new trouble brings fear into those who haven’t recovered from previous traumatic events. The Mind Flayer doesn’t seem to be done with Hawkins yet, as it specifically has its sight set on Eleven. Even though Eleven is trying to live a typical teenage life, it seems another fight is on the way and all signs are pointing at a final battle at the Starcourt Mall in Stranger Things season 3.

Stranger Things Season 3 Cast

The series’ main cast is returning for Stranger Things season 3. Finn Wolfhard (Mike Wheeler), Millie Bobby Brown (Eleven), Gaten Matarazzo (Dustin Henderson), Caleb McLaughlin (Lucas Sinclair), Noah Schnapp (Will Byers), and Sadie Sink (Max Mayfield) were featured on Stranger Things season 3’s official poster. Winona Ryder (Joyce Byers), David Harbour (Jim Hopper), Natalia Dyer (Nancy Byers), Charlie Heaton (Jonathan Byers), Joe Keery (Steve Harrington), and Dacre Montgomery (Billy Hargrove) are also expected to have major roles in Stranger Things season 3, though the extent of their roles hasn’t been confirmed yet.

Priah Ferguson was bumped up to a recurring role with her character Erica, the younger sister of Lucas. Four new characters will make their debut in Stranger Things season 3 as well. Maya Hawke will portray Robin, a teenager who works alongside Steve at Scoops Ahoy in the mall. Cary Elwes was cast as the corrupt Mayor Kline, while Jake Busey is said to be portraying a local reporter named Bruce. The lifeguard, Heather, that goes missing is played by actress Francesca Reale. There’s also a strong possibility that Stranger Things season 3 will see the return of certain, past characters, including Matthew Modine as Dr. Brenner and Linnea Berthelsen as Kali.
