Warning: Contains SPOILERS for Texas Chainsaw Massacre 2022.

Netflix’s Texas Chainsaw Massacre 2022 provided a belated sequel to director Tobe Hooper’s classic 1974 horror, prompting the question of whether the reboot will be followed by Texas Chainsaw Massacre 2? Critics have not been kind to Texas Chainsaw Massacre 2022. Despite the return of slasher cinema icon Leatherface providing plenty of brutal gore for horror fans, most reviews concur that Texas Chainsaw Massacre 2022 failed to recreate Halloween2018’s formula despite bringing back the original movie’s final girl Sally Hardesty.

However, every earlier Texas Chain Saw Massacre sequel also received negative reviews. Despite this, much like its masked antagonist, the Texas Chainsaw Massacre franchise still refuses to die. As a result, many fans of the genre are now wondering whether Texas Chainsaw Massacre 2022 will receive a sequel.

It’s not an easy question to answer, since the sequel’s performance on the streaming service will ultimately decide the future fate of the Texas Chainsaw Massacre franchise. However, if Texas Chainsaw Massacre 2 does happen, there are a few survivors who can still return to the series. Unlike Scream 2022‘s sequel, which can bring back many franchise favorites, Texas Chainsaw Massacre 2022 did kill off most of its cast—but not all of them.

Will Texas Chainsaw Massacre 2 Happen?

It’s tough to tell whether Texas Chainsaw Massacre 2 will happen given the critical drubbing received by Texas Chainsaw Massacre 2022. However, bad reviews have never stopped this slasher series before, and there’s a good chance that the Netflix’s movie plentiful gore and ham-fisted by effective social satire will be enough to guarantee the reboot becomes a hit for the streaming service. If so, a sequel could well be possible.

How Texas Chainsaw Massacre’s Ending Sets Up A Sequel

Texas Chainsaw Massacre 2022’s ending sets up a sequel with the same brute force approach as many classic slasher movies. Specifically, the final scene almost perfectly inverts the twist ending of 1984’s original Nightmare On Elm Street. There, the final girl Nancy’s mom was pulled through a window by Freddy Krueger at the last second, whereas here, heroine Lila’s sister Melody is pulled through a car window and decapitated by Leatherface just as the duo leave the town of Harlow having seemingly evaded its infamous killer. That sets up Leatherface still being on the loose, and another conflict with Lila in The Texas Chainsaw Massacre 2.

Texas Chainsaw Massacre 2 Cast: Who Could Return

Elsie Fisher’s Lila could return for the movie’s sequel, and there’s a distant possibility that Sarah Yarkin’s headstrong Melody could come back for Texas Chainsaw Massacre 2. Admittedly, Melody is decapitated via chainsaw in the movie’s final scene, but Texas Chainsaw Massacre 2022’s ending is so abrupt and absurd that it could easily be retconned as a dream sequence (and arguably should be, given how much the blackly comic punchline deflates the preceding movie’s tension). As for Texas Chainsaw Massacre 2022‘s original returning cast member, final girl Sally Hardesty would be a harder task, as she is stabbed through the midsection with the titular tool and seems definitively dead by the movie’s ending. That said, if Leatherface could survive multiple shootings and stabbings unscathed, there’s a good chance Sally received medical help in time to save her life.

Texas Chainsaw Massacre 2 Predicted Release Date

Judging by earlier releases in the franchise, it will be a long time before viewers see another Texas Chainsaw Massacre movie. There was a five-year wait between the most recent sequel and 2022’s reboot and another four years between 2013’s Texas Chainsaw Massacre 3D and that movie’s 2017 prequel. As such, it will likely be at least 2025 before viewers can expect to see Texas Chainsaw Massacre 2, even if Texas Chainsaw Massacre 2022 succeeds in reviving the franchise.
