The OA season 2 releases in March, but what can fans expect from the new season? The OA was one of Netflix’s strangest, yet compelling releases of 2016. Written by Zal Batmanglij and Brit Marling, the show essentially focused on Prairie, a blind woman who went missing for seven years before returning to civilization having regained her sight.

Marling took the lead role of Prairie, and The OA delved into her time away from her family, when she had been subjected to near-death experiments at the hands of a scientist and possible FBI Agent, Hap (Jason Isaacs). The OA was confusing, quirky, and totally gripping. Prairie formed a friendship of sorts with four teenagers in her hometown, while we also found out that she had a deep connection or romance with Homer, a fellow captor. When a shooting took place at the teenager’s school, Prairie got shot, and The OA season 1 ended with her waking in a white room, calling out “Homer?

The OA Season 2 Release Date

The OA season 2 releases on March 22 on Netflix. Given the complex nature of the show, and the fact that one of its co-writers is also the lead, it understandably took a long time to write. But filming started in January 2018 and wrapped some time ago. However, post-production on The OA season 2 took as long, if not longer, than production itself. With a March release date for The OA season 2, the new seasons is coming more than two years after The OA season 1 released in December 2016.

The OA Season 2 Story

It’s more or less impossible to predict the path that Batmanglij and Marling will take with The OA season 2’s story, but there are a few key points that will be addressed. According to The OA season 2 synopsis, as well as The OA season 2 trailer, the OA herself has been transported into another dimension. But despite being somewhere entirely new, the OA is still going to be Hap’s captive. As for Homer and everyone else, The OA season 2 will still continue their story in the original dimension.

Part II introduces Karim Washington, a private detective tasked with finding a missing teen, Michelle Vu. His path crosses with OA, as they try to solve the mystery of Michelle’s whereabouts and a house on Nob Hill connected to the disappearance of several teenagers. Meanwhile, back in the first dimension, BBA, Angie and the boys find themselves on a journey to understand the truth behind OA’s story and the incredible realities she described.

Of course, there are still details regarding The OA season 2 that remain a mystery. What’s happened to the other teenagers in the aftermath of the school shooting also needs to be explored, and fans will no doubt be hoping the identity of the shooter will be revealed. Given the intricate and detailed nature of The OA, it’s unlikely it was carried out by a random character. The OA season 2 is also likely to explore Prairie’s story in finer detail, as well as the inner-workings of cross-dimensional travel. Most likely, The OA season 2 will answer some questions but raise even more.

Why The OA Season 2 Took So Long

The main reason behind the delay in The OA season 2 release is the complexity of the show. As Marling herself pointed out, many fans compared season 1 to being like an 8-hour movie. That’s a pretty accurate comparison, and it’s easy to see why writing such a detailed, multi-layered 8-hour season would take so long. Not to mention, there are so many possible avenues to explore, and outcomes for this group of characters, that even the brainstorming must’ve been a very complex and headache-inducing process.

Plus, of course, Marling also stars in The OA, meaning they need to have the whole thing written before filming starts so that she can concentrate on her performance; the role is a challenging one and not easy to slip in and out of. Marling took to Instagram to explain the delay back in November, and added that her collaboration with Batmanglij has resulted in each episode having a “different length, scope, and even genre.” Given the creativity of the pair, The OA season 2’s long wait is sure to be worth it.
