Netflix’s Conversations with a Killer: The Ted Bundy Tapes came out on January 24, 2019. It is made up of four episodes that include actual interviews with Bundy, his friends and family members, surviving victims and those who worked on the case. Netflix’s Extremely Wicked, Shockingly Evil and Vile, which came out on May 3, 2019, focuses on Ted Bundy’s relationship with Elizabeth Kendall. It stars Zac Efron and Lily Collins.

10 The Sinner

The Sinner is a television show that premiered on August 2, 2017 (the second season ran from August 1 to September 19, 2018, and a third season has been announced). It is about Cora Tannetti, who is portrayed by Jessica Biel, who stabs a man and who has no clue as to why she did it. Detective Harry Ambrose is portrayed by Bill Pullman, and he helps Tannetti uncover the “why.” This exciting series keeps fans of the edges of their seat, which will surely lead to then binge-watching the next season and trying to wait patiently for the third one!

9 The Act

The Act is a Hulu show that came out on March 20, 2019. It is about Gypsy Rose Blanchard, who is played by actress Joey King, and her mother, Dee Dee Blanchard, who is played by actress Patricia Arquette. Gypsy is sick and in a wheelchair, but as more truths come out about her conditions, her relationship with her overprotective mother worsens. Eventually, a murder takes place. This is all based on true events, as a body really was found, in 2015, in Missouri. The writing, directing and cast have all been praised by fans and critics.

8 Mindhunter

The show Mindhunter is based on a book that is called Mindhunter: Inside the FBI’s Elite Serial Crime Unit. Charlize Theron is an executive producer on it, while Jonathan Groff, Holt McCallany and Hannah Gross star in it. This is another Netflix series, which was released on October 13, 2017. The second season should begin in August 2019. The story is set in the 70s when FBI agents Holden Ford and Bill Tench interviewed serial killers to learn more about their processes, which eventually helped when dealing with cases. Author John E. Douglas actually did this “criminal-personality profiling“, which is detailed in the book that inspired this series.

7 The People v. O.J. Simpson

The People v. O. J. Simpson: American Crime Story is a television series from FX, which premiered on February 2, 2016. It is all about the O. J. Simpson murder case, and it is told with the help of some well-known actors and actresses, such as the following: Cuba Gooding Jr. as O. J. Simpson, Sarah Paulson as Marcia Clark, David Schwimmer as Robert Kardashian, John Travolta as Robert Shapiro and Sterling K. Brown as Christopher Darden. The performances, directing and writing were celebrated, and the series received 22 Primetime Emmy Award nominations in 13 categories and won nine awards.  

6 The Jeffrey Dahmer Files

Jeffrey Dahmer was arrested in 1991 when he was sentenced to 957 years in prison. This documentary, which premiered at the 2012 SXSW film festival, goes over all of this—what led up to it, what was done, what happened to him and more—using reenactments and interviews. The Jeffrey Dahmer Files was called “one of the creepiest documentaries of the year” by President of Sundance Selects/IFC Films Jonathan Sehring, as it takes a deep dive into the crimes this man committed between the years of 1978 and 1991. Yes, Dahmer is infamous within this realm, so this flick belongs on the must-watch list.

5 Making a Murderer

Making a Murderer is a documentary-style show about Steven Avery, a real man with an interesting story; he served 18 years due to a wrongful conviction. This first season of this series was released via Netflix on December 18, 2015, and it told of Avery’s life between 1985 and 2007. On October 19, 2018, the second season came out, dealing with what happened after the conviction. Making a Murderer is a popular and an award-winning show—that was even talked about by people like Alec Baldwin, Ricky Gervais, and Mandy Moore—earning it a spot within this piece.

4 American Horror Story: Cult

The seventh season of American Horror Story was called Cult, and it premiered on September 5, 2017. In this season of this notable series, a cult pops up after the 2016 U.S. presidential election. Evan Peters’ role in all of this is something to see for sure, and celebs such as Sarah Paulson, Emma Roberts, Billie Lourd, and Chaz Bono also played a part in the creepy story. Overall, this season received positive reviews from critics and several award nominations, so those who have not watched it yet need to do so as soon as possible!

3 Helter Skelter

In 1974, a book called Helter Skelter was released, and in 1976, the television film version of it was, as well. This movie is all about the Charles Manson Family. There are details regarding their victims like Sharon Tate, the investigation of Manson, the trial after he was caught and what the term “helter skelter” even means. Manson is as widely known as Ted Bundy is—if not more than—and there are several flicks that focus on him. But this TV film in particular—which also won awards, according to its Wikipedia page—is definitely another suggestion to watch.

2  H. H. Holmes: America’s First Serial Killer

H. H. Holmes: America’s First Serial Killer is a documentary film from the year 2004, and it is based on the true story of a man named H. H. Holmes. He confessed to 27 murders, though he may have killed as many as 200 people in a building he owned near the 1893 World’s Fair: Columbian Exposition. See his childhood home and the courtroom where the “trial of the century” was held through reenactments, interviews, and photographs that help bring this story to life. This work was even named the Best Horror Documentary at the Screamfest Horror Film Festival.

1 Silence of the Lambs

Then, of course, there is Silence of the Lambs from 1991. It stars Jodie Foster as Clarice Starling, a trainee in the FBI trainee who turns to Dr. Hannibal Lecter, a psychiatrist and serial killer played by Anthony Hopkins. This film was the third to ever win Academy Awards in all top five categories, and it is the first and the only Best Picture winner that’s also a horror film. It has been called one of the greatest movies of all time and the most influential thriller film of all time, and the main characters have been named the greatest film heroine and villain. If anyone hasn’t seen this… just watch it!
