Rhodey’s scrapped space suit for Avengers: Endgame is now revealed. One of the first heroes introduced in the MCU, the character is among the few who were re-cast. Terrence Howard’s version in Iron Man was replaced in Iron Man 2 with Don Cheadle who has played the role since then. His latest outing was in the MCU’s culminating movie.

One of the several people who survived Thanos’ (Josh Brolin) decimation at the end of Avengers: Infinity War, Rhodey coped with their loss by continuing his responsibility as a hero. But when the idea of Time Heist came up, he rejoined the team and traveled back into 2014 with Nebula (Karen Gillan) in the hopes of swiping the Space Stone/Orb from Peter Quill (Chris Pratt). Overall, Rhodey wore two suits in Endgame, but it turns out, he was supposedly going to have three.

The third one dubbed the cosmic War Machine armor/Mark V was going to be what he changes to after the scrapped giant underwater set piece in Morag. Apparently, he would’ve been wearing the Mark IV which was going to dissolve due to the water’s acidity in the planet. Ultimately, none of these elements were used in Endgame, hence the third suit serving no purpose. Instead, he simply wore the Mark VI to Morag and the War Machine/Iron Patriot Mark VII during the final battle. Despite this, concept artist Phil Saunders shares what it was going to look for the movie on his Instagram account. Check it out below:

Unused concept for Rhodey’s War Machine Mk5 “Cosmic” suit for Avengers:Endgame. Originally the final battle would have taken place in outer space so I developed this booster pack for what was at the time the approved Mk5 design. #avengersendgame #avengers #rhodey #warmachine #ironman #ironmansuit #mcu #marvelstudios #marvel #conceptart

As Saunders explained, the cosmic suit was equipped with two booster packs, reminiscent of the additional thrusters Tony Stark/Iron Man (Robert Downey Jr.) had in Infinity War. This suit would’ve gone in conjunction with the original Endgame final battle which was going to take place in space. Instead, directors Joe and Anthony Russo, as well as writers Christopher Markus and Stephen McFeely decided to ground it in the Avengers HQ. Not much is known regarding the specifics of the space-set battle, but knowing that there are some Earth-based heroes who didn’t necessarily have the armor to fight beyond the planet, it ultimately worked for the best.

Since his debut as War Machine, Rhodey’s armors had been created by Tony. Now that the MCU founding hero is gone, it’s curious how his best pal would be able to continue improving his suits. Marvel Studios has yet to confirm what’s next for the character following the events of Avengers: Endgame, however, Cheadle has been vocal about what he wants to see his character do moving forward. And with the debut of Marvel series for Disney+, it won’t be that difficult to execute them to reality.
