The ending of Watch Dogs: Legion saw a sequence of scenes that were full of explosions, espionage, and drama, and it may come into play in a potential Watch Dogs 4. Ubisoft is yet to formally announce a follow-up to Watch Dogs: Legion, which released in 2020, but the series has become one of the publisher’s staples and it’s possible that one is currently in development. The Watch Dogs games have so far been fairly self-contained, but there is potential for the events of Legion to heavily impact a future title.

Watch Dogs: Legion saw the finale begin with main antagonist Zero Day hacking into electronic media and announcing themselves to London and promising destruction. To do this, Zero Day intended to hack into all Bagley units, which are integrated into core infrastructures throughout Britain. The London-based DedSec group that you play as, which is comprised of multiple NPCs from Watch Dogs: Legion’s version of London, split into different groups to launch a multi-pronged counterattack to stop Zero Day, or Sabine, from wreaking havoc. This included confronting Sabine herself atop Blume Tower and simultaneously overheating and destroying Bagley.

As DedSec rushes to thwart Sabine, players are shown a London thrown into disarray. Traffic lights malfunction, drones drop from the sky, cars crash and explode, and unfortunate pedestrians caught in the wrong place at the wrong time are killed. Bagley also continues to mention all the other destruction he is involuntarily causing elsewhere, including disrupting medical supplies and shutting down air traffic controls. Eventually, DedSec manages to accomplish their goals and see Sabine plummet to her death, thus ending the threat of Zero Day. Watch Dogs: Legion’s ending also sees DeadSec destroy Bagley’s servers, effectively killing him. Post-credits, players are treated to a cutscene that shows DedSec hard at work attempting to “revive” their self-aware and sentient Bagley, and ultimately, being successful in doing so.

How Watch Dogs: Legion’s Ending Sets Up Watch Dogs 4

There are many implications that the ending sequence could have in setting up a future Watch Dogs sequel. One major implication is that DedSec has reached the public eye. Though the members can continue to operate in secret, the organization itself is sure to be known throughout the world after being framed for the bombing that kickstarted Watch Dogs: Legion’s story, and then the organization’s role in stopping Zero Day by the finale. Another implication is that Sabine is apparently dead, but there is still the matter of all the destruction, damages, and deaths she caused as Zero Day. The matter of responsibility for the bombings eventually publicly fell upon the leader of Watch Dogs: Legion’s Albion faction, Nigel Cass.

However, Sabine was also responsible and involved. While Sabine had gone rogue, she was still a member of DedSec. This could raise concerns of power and corruption and even cause a schism in DedSec’s operation. This conflict was already explored with the power struggle between DedSec and Zero Day, so the concept could be revisited again in future titles as more disillusioned DedSec members rally to their cause. Sabine herself might return since her death is assumed but her body is never recovered. It is also possible that future games might see more government attempts to crack down on DedSec factions around the world out of fear of what rogue DedSec members can do.

Fans of the Watch Dogs franchise will know that sequel games do not necessarily follow the same protagonists or stick to the same location, similar to how Ubisoft’s Assassin’s Creed games switches between historical settings. With that in mind, it’s likely that the next Watch Dogs game will explore a different location with a different group of characters. There’s still an overarching element with the series though,so the ending of Watch Dogs: Legion will likely still impact future titles in various ways.
