What We Do In The Shadows season 3 will feature more departures from the usual setting and characters, similar to the season 2 Jackie Daytona episode. The FX comedy series is based on the New Zealand mockumentary of the same name, which was directed by Thor: Love and Thunder’s Taika Waititi, and starred Waititi, Jemaine Clement and Jonathan Brugh. The series transplants events to Staten Island and features a new group of vampires, namely Nandor The Relentless (Kayvan Novak), Nadja (Natasia Demetriou), Laszlo (Matt Berry) and Colin Robinson (Mark Proksch). It also features their familiar, Guillermo (Harvey Guillén).

While What We Do In The Shadows season 1 stuck to Staten Island, season 2 featured a number of new settings and characters. None more so than episode 6, “On The Run,” which followed Laszlo to a bar in Pennsylvania, where he assumes the alias of Jackie Daytona in order to escape the attentions of the vengeful vampire Jim, played by Mark Hamill in a memorable cameo appearance. What We Do In The Shadows writers have teased season 3 will include gargoyles and other new mythical creatures, but they’re also looking to explore the wider universe of the series too.

Speaking at the annual PaleyFest (via /Film) showrunners, executive producers and writers Paul Simms and Stefani Robinson say that the Jackie Daytona episode has inspired them to go beyond the show’s usual setting. While they won’t be returning to Pennsylvania or Jackie Daytona, specifically, the pair say that What We Do In The Shadows season 3 will “break format” more often, similar to the way the Jackie Daytona episode did. Additionally, they tease that it will go in new directions, hinting that season 3 may look and feel very different. You can read their full comments below:

“That episode gave us the opportunity to break format with all of the characters and push the show into new settings, formats, characters to explore what we’ve established. So not another Jackie Daytona adventure, but we have plans for the show to go into completely different directions.”

Just how different What We Do In The Shadows season 3 will be compared to seasons 1 and 2 is up in the air at the moment, but clearly Simms and Robinson are keen to shake things up for the next batch of episodes. That might be partly due to What We Do In The Shadows co-creator Jemaine Clement exiting ahead of season 3, giving the showrunners more creative freedom to take the universe and expand upon it. Clearly, they’re hoping they can visit new characters and settings and give the show a new burst of creative energy for season 3.

Hopefully that will allow What We Do In The Shadows to remain fresh and appealing to fans, as concept-based fantasy comedy shows tend to run out of steam after a few seasons. That hasn’t been the case for FX’s show as yet, and it seems like the showrunners are determined to keep it that way. Filming on season 3 reportedly started in February, but there is no word yet on when it will debut.
