Thanks to a new streaming deal between Disney and Sony, the Spider-Man movies are coming to Disney+, but when exactly will that happen? Since its launch in November 2019, Disney+ has quickly established itself as a major player in the streaming wars. Sure, it’s not quite at Netflix’s level of ubiquity yet, but it’s likely to get there in the next few years, at least according to industry prognosticators. A big part in that success has been Disney’s ownership of Marvel Studios, which has afforded fans instant access to almost the entire MCU catalog since day one.

Unfortunately, that didn’t include three MCU films, due to deals struck prior to the existence of Marvel Studios. Universal Pictures maintains distribution rights to 2008’s The Incredible Hulk, and Sony Pictures still controls Spider-Man’s MCU movies, despite them being the result of a team-up with Marvel. For those reasons, Hulk and Spidey’s MCU entries seemed destined to never be available alongside the rest of the franchise to stream on Disney+.

Yet, this new deal makes it possible, and proves once again that in the wild world of entertainment, nothing is truly impossible. Now, fans just need to be patient until Spider-Man swings over to his new home at Disney+. In the meantime, here’s when that could happen.

Here’s When Disney+ Might Get Sony’s Spider-Man Movies

So far, nothing specific has been spelled out as far as when Spider-Man movies will hit Disney+. In a cool bonus though, reports on the Disney/Sony deal do make it sound like the Spider-Man movies made prior to his joining the MCU will also be included. It’s known that some content from Sony’s library will begin hitting Disney-owned streaming outlets in June, but it wouldn’t be too surprising to see Disney opt to add the Spider-Man franchise to Disney+ later in 2021, close to the December 17 theatrical debut of Spider-Man: No Way Home.

That may seem like a long time to wait, but it would be a shrewd move, as it’s been highly publicized that Spider-Man: No Way Home will serve as the MCU’s proper introduction to the multiverse concept, with characters from Sam Raimi’s Spider-Man trilogy and The Amazing Spider-Man movies crossing over to the MCU. With that being the case, what better time to add these prior films to Disney+ than not long before No Way Home, so that fans can go in with a refreshed memory. Waiting a while could also be partially not a Disney decision, as some existing streaming deals may have a bit before they run out. For example, Far From Home is currently streaming on Starz thanks to a longstanding previous deal with Sony. That deal expires in 2021, but it’s not clear when in 2021. Either way though, it’s hard to imagine the Spider-Man catalog not being on Disney+ by fall 2021 at the latest.
