Warning: Contains SPOILERS for The Book of BobaFett episode 1

Here’s when The Book of Boba Fett is set in the Star Wars timeline, including its flashbacks and present-day storylines. The Mandalorian brought back the iconic bounty hunter during season 2, which confirmed that he survived his fall into the Sarlacc Pit in canon. However, despite these events taking place after the original trilogy, The Book of Boba Fett actually utilizes multiple different timeframes.

Boba Fett’s supporting role in Din Djarin and Grogu’s story proved to just be the beginning of his Star Wars return, as The Mandalorian season 2 finale confirmed plans for The Book of Boba Fett. This came with a tease of Boba Fett taking over Jabba the Hutt’s criminal empire, which set up what the series would be about. Although Boba Fett technically debuted in the infamous Holiday Special, most were introduced to him in The Empire Strikes Back. It was here that the bounty hunter’s fandom began to grow as he captured Han Solo and worked for Darth Vader. However, Return of the Jedi featured his presumed death in a rather unceremonious way. George Lucas then brought Boba Fett back for Star Wars: Episode II – Attack of the Clones, where he was featured as a young kid. Lucasfilm contemplated bringing him back further with a solo movie, but The Mandalorian season 2 is ultimately where his return happened.

SCREENRANT VIDEO OF THE DAY

The Book of Boba Fett is currently focused on telling two different stories. One is entirely made up of flashbacks from different points in Boba Fett’s past, and the other explores what he is doing after The Mandalorian. Due to the expansive nature of the Star Wars timeline, here’s when both of these storylines take place.

When Book of Boba Fett’s Flashbacks Are Set In The Star Wars Timeline

The beginning of The Book of Boba Fett primarily deals with flashbacks to the bounty hunter’s past. This includes seeing shots of Kamino and a young Boba on Geonosis after Jango Fett’s death. These moments come from Star Wars: Episode II – Attack of the Clones when Boba was 10 years old during the year 22 BBY (Before the Battle of Yavin). The other flashbacks in The Book of Boba Fett show him escaping from the Sarlacc Pit and encountering Tusken Raiders. This part of the story presumably is set shortly after Return of the Jedi in the Star Wars timeline, placing the events around 4 ABY (After the Battle of Yavin).

When Book of Boba Fett’s Present Story Takes Place In Star Wars’ Timeline

The rest of The Book of Boba Fett‘s story appears to be set shortly after the events of The Mandalorian season 2. This places Boba Fett’s power-play for Tatooine near 9 ABY. There is a chance The Book of Boba Fett is set closer to 10 ABY depending on how long he and Fennec Shand (Ming-Na Wen) have been setting up the basis for their empire. As a result, there should be roughly five or six years worth of the bounty hunter’s story the show can explore through additional flashbacks before catching up to The Mandalorian‘s events or its own story.
