2020’s Marvel’s Avengers brought the Marvel universe to consoles. It offers players the chance to enjoy co-op and multiplayer alongside a captivating single-player story campaign. The campaign starts off with a young Kamala Khan enjoying A-Day celebrations in San Francisco with her father when things go awry after an attack from Taskmaster. Even after the story campaign of Marvel’s Avengers is finished, the fun doesn’t stop there. Players can engage with their friends in multiplayer or test their skills by fighting solo. There are tons of ways to enjoy multiplayer. Players can play with one friend and fill their strike team with AI teammates, or alternatively, players can fill their strike team entirely with their friends or entirely with strangers, making for a diverse gameplay experience that will have players repeatedly coming back for more.

Does Marvel’s Avengers Support Cross-Play?

As exciting as Marvel’s Avengers is, players will be disappointed to learn that the game does not support cross-play. This means players across different consoles will not be able to play with each other in multiplayer. Players will only be able to engage and interact with other players on the same console. This is surprising given the multitude of platforms the game was released for. Marvel’s Avengers initially debuted for Stadia, Microsoft Windows, PlayStation 4, and Xbox. However, it’s been confirmed that the game will be available on the Xbox Series X and the PlayStation 5 when the next-gen consoles launch in time for this year’s holiday season. PS4 and Xbox One players will be able to upgrade to the next-gen version at no extra cost.

Speaking to Screen Rant, Crystal Dynamics Studio Head Scot Amos confirmed that the game would not support cross-platform play and gave a bit more insight into the reasoning behind the controversial decision. “And as far as cross-platform goes, the benefit of having them [new consoles] multi-years ahead of us is that anything’s possible.”

Amos did confirm, however, that Marvel’s Avengers will be cross-generational in the sense that players on older consoles will be able to interact with those on the newest version. “When you talk about cross play, there is cross-gen play. When you actually have PS4 to PS5 or Xbox One to Xbox Series X, that is something we have committed to,” he explained. “When you start on your Xbox or on your PS4, when and if you upgrade to the next gen consoles, you can carry your save game with you. Or if you don’t go for it, your friends who do can actually play between PS4 and PS5 or Xbox and Xbox Series X. So, cross-gen play, we do support when they launch the new consoles.

While it appears as though cross-platform play has not been ruled out completely, for now, it will not be a feature players can enjoy for now. But with cross-generational play, at least Marvel’s Avengers will give players an opportunity to connect across generations of consoles once the next-gen consoles finally release.
