Persona 5 Strikers brings the Phantom Thieves back for yet another adventure,  combining the series traditional gameplay with Koei Tecmo’s Warriors games. Strikers is a bit of a different experience from the original Persona 5, as it sports a real-time combat system that features massive battles.

Although it’s primarily developed by Koei Tecmo, Strikers does still have the core element of a Persona game. Unlike most Warriors titles, players will be able to roam around and explore cities, talking to NPCs and shopping in the process.

Strikers is much more than just a Warriors spin-off, however, as it features an original story that brings the Phantom Thieves back together. With that in mind, many fans are probably wondering when the game takes place in relation to the original Persona 5.

Persona 5 Strikers Is a Direct Sequel to the Original Game

Persona 5 Strikers directly follows up the events of the original Persona 5, and not the extended events of Persona 5 Royal. The story picks up six months after the end of the original, with Joker and Morgan traveling to Tokyo for a summer camping trip with the rest of the Phantom Thieves. While using an app to try and find good camping locations, Ryuji and Morgana are somehow pulled back into the Metaverse, and a new mystery starts. Events play out over a series of months as displayed on an in-game calendar. However, the calendar is purely aesthetic this time around and doesn’t actually serve a gameplay purpose. Players will also be traveling around Japan this time, including the cities of Sapporo, Okinawa, and more. They may not be as expansive and interactable as Tokyo, but it’s interesting to see other cities in the world of Persona.

As mentioned before, it’s important to make the distinction that Persona 5 Strikers doesn’t follow up on the extended content of Royal. For all intents and purposes, it’s a sequel to the vanilla Persona 5, which means characters like Kasumi Yoshizawa and Goro Akechi won’t appear, and the events of the third semester aren’t really referenced. Despite this, fans will get to meet two new members of the Phantom Thieves that join the group to help solve the new events. The first of these is Sophia, a strange girl that’s actually an AI designed to investigate people’s hearts. Second is a police officer named Zenkichi Hasegawa, who’s assigned to investigate Metaverse-related incidents happening around Japan.

Persona 5 Strikers launches on February 20 for PS4, Nintendo Switch, and PC.
