The sudden return in popularity of the Pokémon Trading Card Game doesn’t appear to be slowing down, as boxes and booster packs remain scarce at local retail stores. The Pokémon TCG saw an increase in popularity over the course of 2020, which has been compounded by a decrease in the production of the cards. Because of this, attempting to find any TCG products may be met with disappointment.

The Pokémon Trading Card Game has remained a popular part of the Pokémon franchise since its release in 1996. The card packs include Pokémon from all 8 generations of the Pokémon game series for fans to collect or slip into playing decks. Currently, the Pokémon TCG is releasing expansions based on the Galar region from Pokémon Sword and Shield, with additions like the newly released Battle Styles set from the DLC The Isle of Armor, and the upcoming Chilling Reign expansion covering The Crown Tundra.

However, fans of the series are in for a battle of a different kind when it comes to finding any packs for their personal collections. Recently, Target announced it’s not carrying the Pokémon TCG, among other collectible card sets, due to concerns for staff safety. There was also an announcement that certain Walmart stores may choose not to stock Pokémon TCG products as well, though the choice will be made on a case-by-case basis for each store.

Pokémon Card Scalpers Are Reselling Boosters And Collectable Boxes

Part of the reason stores like Walmart have had to limit or halt Pokémon TCG sales is due to scalpers. These card scalpers purchase the boxes and packs to resell online at an inflated price or in hopes of finding rare cards currently worth large sums of money. These Pokémon TCG cards include the Shiny VMAX Charizard in the Shining Fates collection currently going for $262 USD on TCGplayer, or the Secret Rare VMAX Pikachu from Vivid Voltage currently selling for $400 USD.

Because stores sell out of cards so quickly, players looking for Pokémon TCG booster packs or expansion boxes may want to call ahead to their local Walmart to see if the store is still stocking the cards, and when a restock might be available. Fans may also want to call their local game stores to see if there is the possibility of putting boxes or packs on hold when they arrive. To help discourage the scalpers and support local and major card retailers, players will likely want to avoid purchasing Pokémon Trading Card Game products from scalpers online.
