The online third-person shooter Resident Evil Re:Verse, which was supposed to be a companion to Resident Evil Village when it releases on May 8, has been delayed. The release date is now set for Summer 2021, with no exact date yet given by Capcom. So, when is Re:Verse‘s new release date most likely to be set?

Those who purchase Village will still be able to acquire Re:Verse for free whenever it comes out, but the wait might be a few months. The multiplayer game pits up to eight players against each other. Combatants play as iconic Resident Evil characters and battle through various locales from the series like the Raccoon Police Department building from Resident Evil 2. When a player is killed, they turn into one of the series’ viral creatures and terrorize other players until they are gunned down a second time.

The announcement of Resident Evil Re:Verse came as a bit of a surprise during the Resident Evil Showcase in January, and Re:Verse has had open beta tests throughout April. Some fans remain confused on Capcom’s attempt to make an online shooter for Resident Evil, but the free inclusion with Village is a nice bonus for those that spend the money on a brand new game.

Is Re:Verse A Resident Evil Village Mode Or Standalone Game?

Resident Evil Re:Verse may be marketed as an entirely separate title from Village – and indeed it will apparently have its own download file – but it’s hard not to consider it yet another game mode tacked on to a mainline Resident Evil game. Village is already coming with the return of fan favorite Mercenaries mode, a timed, score-chasing mode focused on shooting as many baddies as possible. The Resident Evil 3 remake even launched with Resident Evil: Resistance alongside it – another seemingly short-lived game mode that felt tacked-on.

Re:Verse might end up incredibly fun, and it’s hard to argue with the free inclusion, but the sheer number of different, additional games feels like Capcom is just trying anything in the hope that one will stick. The failure of the first Re:Verse beta was already concerning enough, and now that its release is delayed, the future of the game does not seem particularly bright. Hopefully the added development time from the delay will allow for some extra polish.

An engaging, entertaining multiplayer game, especially one that celebrates the franchise as much as Resident Evil: Re:Verse, could be a very worthy addition to the series. Although the Summer 2021 release window is fairly wide, the official first day of summer is June 20, so optimistic players might expect Re:Verse around late June at the earliest.
