After a lot of speculating and waiting, fans have finally seen The Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword HD become a reality. At the latest Nintendo Direct, the company announced the game would be arriving later this year. Here’s everything fans need to know about the game and its release date.

It was the first full Nintendo Direct in over 500 days, and people watching the Direct had high expectations going in. The long-awaited Nintendo Direct arrived with lots of exciting news for Smash Bros. Ultimate, Splatoon, and Zelda fans – to name a few. And while there was no real news regarding Breath of the Wild 2, developers revealed and then shared quite a bit of info about Skyward Sword HD.

The announcement for Skyward Sword HD also included a reveal that special Legend of Zelda Joy-Cons will also release at the same time as the game. Like the original Wii version, Skyward Sword HD will use motion controls for a variety of features like sword combat, using a shield, and firing arrows from Link’s bow. However, the motion controls can be toggled off (a feature many Zelda fans were hoping for), which is especially helpful for anyone playing the game in handheld mode on the standard Switch or on a Switch Lite.

What The Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword HD’s Release Date Is

The release date for The Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword HD is July 16th, 2021. Of course, there have been numerous delays in the gaming industry due to the COVID-19 global pandemic, so there’s always the possibility the date could change. However, given Nintendo’s past announcements, specific release dates – but not always release windows – are usually accurate. So, fans can reasonably expect the July 16th release date for Skyward Sword HD to be met.

The reveal of Skyward Sword HD was nice, but it probably wasn’t too surprising for most Nintendo fans. The game had been leaked on Amazon last year, and rumors of a Skyward Sword remaster for the series’ 35th Anniversary have been pretty prevalent.  Still, it’s great to finally have official confirmation that Skyward Sword HD is happening – and releasing very soon.

More news regarding Skyward Sword HD will be unveiled closer to release. For now, it’s just nice knowing the game really exists and that motion controls will be optional. The Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword HD is set to release on July 16th, 2021. It will be a great way to honor both the 10-year anniversary of the game and the 35th anniversary of the series.
