Deadpool is not known for his heroism in the Marvel Comics, considering his occupation of being the universe’s hitman. But in Venom/Deadpool What If? #1, writer Rick Remender and penciler Shawn Moll take the character to new heights.

Marvel’s “What If?” comics are known for their strange and alluring story lines that veer from the beaten path such as when Spider-Man becomes the Punisher instead. Therefore, it’s no surprise that when Deadpool combines with Venom to create Venompool in the “What If?” comic, things get really weird. So weird in fact that the Merc With A Mouth changes his status and becomes what fans least expect… a hero?

SCREENRANT VIDEO OF THE DAY

In the comic, Galactus hires Deadpool to kill a space deity named The Beyonder, after he managed to magically attach MODOK to Galactus’ rear end (the kind of problem you can expect to find in a Wade Wilson adventure). Although Deadpool is not Galactus’ favorite superhero, he knows that the Merc can get the job done. To ensure that Deadpool doesn’t fail, he gives him the ‘retcon expungifier,’ which he will need to use to erase The Beyonder from existence. But Deadpool can’t resist The Beyonder’s swagger and Jheri curls, eventually agreeing to party with himrather than kill him. In fact, Deadpool loves The Beyonder’s Jheri curls so much, he gets a Jheri curl wig himself. And yes, it only gets weirder from here on out.

As Deadpool and The Beyonder are drinking champagne in the limousine, Spider-Man crashes the party, which causes the limousine to plummet from the sky. To save itself, Venom detaches from Spider-Man and attaches to Deadpool; thus, creating the Jheri curled Venompool… and the start of an unlikely hero!

Venompool starts off by taking out small time crooks, before deciding he will try to join a team like the Avengers, Fantastic Four, the Defenders; but no one wants the “becurled.” Because of the constant rejection, Venompool rips out his Jheri curls and creates a Venom offspring — codenamed Carnage Curl — and the entire gang soon end up on The Hairy Spranger Show where they discover Carnage Curl is pregnant. But who’s the baby daddy? Bam! Galactus crashes through the ceiling and claims he’s the father! As the space entities fight to the death, Venompool does something he should have done in the beginning. He uses the retcon expungifier to erase Galactus and The Beyonder from existence and saves the universe!

But similar to other Marvel characters, the fame and fortune he gains from saving the universe goes straight to his head; nothing is ever good enough. The comic takes a dark turn as Venompool begins to kill any superhero who ever steps for a minute in his spotlight. In fact, he kills every superhero and villain and becomes king of the world. But even that’s not good enough because in the end, Venompool attempts to search for his true self as the narrator states, “his true self was an unredeemable ass,” and Venompool uses the retcon expungifier to erase the universe.

This is not the first time that Deadpool tries to do good and only creates more problems in the process because there is that one moment when Deadpool becomes the worst Iron Man ever. Throughout the Deadpool comics, there are plenty of the best and worst versions of the character. But it’s difficult to say where this version of Deadpool lies. He starts off on a good path, but then takes a trip down mayhem lane when he kills kills the Marvel Universe again.
