The Book of Boba Fett‘s Tusken Raiders don’t appear to have any females among their ranks, but they might just be hidden. Following the success of The Mandalorian on Disney+, Lucasfilm is making Star Wars streaming shows the focus of the franchise’s immediate future. The Book of Boba Fett is the first of several announced Star Wars shows to stream on Disney+ in 2022, with its first episode arriving on December 29.

Picking up after the ending of The Mandalorian season 2, the first episode “Stranger in a Strange Land” intersperses present-day events with flashbacks to Boba Fett (Temuera Morrison) after escaping from the belly of the sand-dwelling Sarlacc. Boba Fett is also captured by the Tusken Raiders who occupy the deserts of Tatooine. However, acute Star Wars fans will notice that they all appear to be male, at least at first glance.

This can be determined from the masks worn by the Tusken Raiders, with the masks worn by females tending to be longer and less simple in design than those worn by males. However, a Tusken population composed entirely of a single gender would be highly unlikely to be able to survive in the Tatooine desert, as well as having no ability to procreate. What’s more likely is that the female Tuskens are present, but their masks have simply been redesigned.

While the reasoning for this isn’t clear, it might be a matter of the Tuskens electing to mask themselves as a singular tribe or unit. Having every Tusken wearing a mask of a similar design deindividualizes them from each other, allowing them to instill just a bit more of a face of aggression against their enemies on Tatooine. The Tuskens seen might also be of a tribe with less stringent adherence to traditions regarding male and female masks and are simply more concerned with protecting their faces from the sun and sandstorms.

It’s still very early in The Book of Boba Fett, and much about where the show is headed still remains a mystery. The Tatooine setting of the first episode makes it likely that “Stranger in a Strange Land” won’t be the last time the Tuskens are seen on the show. Whatever role they take when they return, it’s hard to believe that, despite the Tuskens being uniform in the male-issued masks they wear, that there aren’t any females among them. It may simply be a matter of the Tuskens donning a single mask design across the board, for whatever reason.
