Where Are They Now? The Cast Of Remember The Titans

Every so often, a film comes along that propels nearly every one of its main actors to stardom, or at the very least, a modicum success in the industry. As we look back at the casts of a some films, we view into a sort of time capsule in which we see the past of some of Hollywood’s biggest names. In the year 2000, that film wasRemember the Titans.

Remember the Titans celebrates its sweet sixteen this year, and to commemorate the occasion, we revisit the stars of the film a decade and a half later to see what they have been up to. Between television and film, many of the movie’s stars have gone on to amass success throughout their careers as actors and actresses. While most have remained in show business, some have changed careers entirely. So, let us see just what the “mighty, mighty, Titans” have been up to since their perfect season 16 years ago.

14 Denzel Washington (Coach Herman Boone)

In the wake of T.C. Williams High School’s desegregation, Herman Boone was charged with the task of coaching the school’s football team in this racially divided community. Being a hard-nosed, African-American head coach – especially one who had replaced a beloved coach in the community, who just so happened to be white – was a difficult task to say the least, but Coach Boone’s ideals and winning ways soon translated and transcended race to inspire not only the high school, but the entire town as well.

Denzel Washington was already a respected, Academy Award-winning actor before playing Coach Herman Boone in Remember the Titans – starring in films such as Glory, Malcolm X, and The Hurricane – and he went on to amass even more success after the beloved sports drama. Washington has since gone on to win another Oscar for his role as Detective Alonzo Harris in the 2002 crime thriller Training Day and has continued his reign as one of Hollywood’s biggest movie stars. Most recently, Denzel has been awarded the Golden Globe Cecil B. DeMille Award for “outstanding contributions to the world of entertainment.” Later this year, he stars in Antoine Fuqua’s remake of The Magnificent Seven.

13 Craig Kirkwood (Jerry ‘Rev’ Harris)

Perhaps the best description of Jerry ‘Rev’ Harris comes from one of the characters (Louis Lastik) in the film itself: “People call him that ’cause he’s always praying and he won’t abide with a foul tongue.” On a racially and culturally divided team, ‘The Rev’ had room in his heart to accept each one of his teammates, claiming that they were all “just another blessed child in God’s lovin’ family.”

Since his role as the warm-hearted Jerry ‘Rev’ Harris, Craig Kirkwood has gone on to star alongside Tahj Mowry and Shia LaBeouf in the Disney Channel Original movie Hounded, in addition to a few stints on various television programs. After taking a break from acting in the early to mid-2000’s, Kirkwood graduated from Loyola Law School and now works as a criminal defense attorney in Los Angeles.

12 Earl Poitier (Blue Stanton)

Earl Poitier is still best remembered for his role as the Motown-loving football player in Remember the Titans. His energy on and off the field was the soul of the “mighty, mighty, Titans,” and the character often provided comic relief for a film with racially heavy themes.

As much as Blue acted as the voice for the Titans, the actor behind him (Earl Poitier) has remained quiet as an actor in the years since. After playing a supporting role in the Nick Cannon lead film Drumline, Earl Poitier has since gone on to be a television actor in various series over the years. After about a six year hiatus from acting, Poitier’s career is coming back a bit with a resurgence of sorts in the television sphere; his most recent gig being the role of the recurring character of Officer McCaffey in the Netflix original series Bloodline.

11 Burgess Jenkins (Ray Budds)

Of course, not everyone on the Titans came around to Coach Boone’s personal philosophies. If every party needs a pooper than that role was filled by Ray Budds – and no Coach, that is not Dean Martin. Budds is most memorable for his infamous decision to refuse to block for any of his black teammates, resulting in his dismissal from the team.

Despite having a relatively small role in Remember the Titans, Burgess Jenkins has enjoyed a fair amount of success in his career as an actor. Like many of his compatriots, Burgess has gone on to work mostly as a television actor; his most notable roles being: Bobby on One Tree Hill, Randy Robert for Nashville, Eddie Hall/Major Kurt Dandridge in Army Wives, and most recently his recurring character Billy Abbott in the ongoing drama The Young and the Restless.

10 Ryan Hurst (Gerry Bertier)

Gerry Bertier was the resident All-American for the Titans and eventually the heart and soul that brought the team together. Initially, Bertier was reluctant to share the field with his African-American teammates and even made his concerns known to Coach Boone. Like the majority of his peers, Gerry learned to accept all his teammates and began to see them as brothers before long. However, an extremely unfortunate car accident paralyzed T.C. Williams’ superstar defensive player and he was forced to leave the game of football behind.

Ryan Hurst has been active in a myriad of different roles as an actor throughout the years. Most notably, he has enjoyed the success and longevity of several television series – Sons of Anarchy, Bates Motel, and Outsiders – as a recurring character. In addition to his work on television, he also has worked as a supporting actor in films such as Rango and We Were Soldiers.

9 Nicole Ari Parker (Carol Boone)

While the film mostly focused on the Titans and the obstacles they overcame as a team, we still got a brief glimpse into the life of Coach Herman Boone and his family. His wife, Carol Boone, played the role of the supportive spouse and the solid foundation on which her family rested. When her husband began to doubt himself – even for a moment – Carol was always there for reassurance.

Although Nicole Ari Parker saw some success in film at the turn of the century, she has since turned to work in television. In the years since acting alongside Denzel Washington in Remember the Titans, Parker has had numerous recurring roles on several television series: The System, Soul Food, Second Time Around, The Deep End, Revolution, Murder in the First, and Rosewood. In addition to this, she has also contributed starring and supporting roles in TV movies such as Never Better, Big Mike, and Secret Lives of Husbands and Wives.

8 Kip Pardue (Ronnie ‘Sunshine’ Bass)

Ronnie Bass got his nickname ‘Sunshine’ due to the fact that he was from California. As the new guy on the team, ‘Sunshine’ caught his share of flak early on. His hair, style, and way of speaking set himself apart from the rest of the team but that did not stop him from holding his own as the team’s quarterback.

In the years directly after Remember the Titans, Kip Pardue went on to contribute supporting roles in films such as Driven, Rules of Attraction, and Thirteen. Pardue continues to be steadily working actor in Hollywood today, and much like his former compatriots, he has provided his services to television as well with recurring roles on Ray Donovan, ER, and AMC’s Mad Men. Currently, he is acting on an upcoming television series, Outcast, and a movie entitled Brand New Old Love which is slated for a 2017 release.

7 Ethan Suplee (Louie Lastik)

Louie Lastik was a big lineman with an even bigger heart. As more or less a giant teddy bear, Lastik got along with just about everyone on the team. Even though Louie was a white player, he found that he bonded more with his African-American teammates due to his love for The Temptations. He was not the sharpest student but had an infectious personality you could not help but fall in love with.

Ethan Suplee is probably the most diverse character actor on this list. His range of roles have helped give him longevity in his career. Like just about everyone else on this list, Suplee has taken a crack at television with his starring role as Randy Hickey on My Name is Earl, but he has not stopped there. With supporting roles in Blow, The Butterfly Effect, Without a Paddle, Mr. Woodcock, and Wolf of Wall Street, Ethan Suplee has been in some memorable movies over the past 16 years.

6 Wood Harris (Julius Campbell)

Julius Campbell was more than a bit skeptical of the potential of a desegregated football team at first – much like the rest of the team and community – but like most of the other players he eventually comes around. He grew to love and respect Gerry Bertier and came to think of him as family. Bertier even calls him out later in the film and proclaims “that’s my brother.”

Wood Harris has also been a consistently working actor in Hollywood over the past 20 years. Right after his role as Julius Campbell in Remember the Titans Harris took up a recurring role on arguably one of televisions finest shows ever made, The Wire. More recently, he has gotten back into film with supporting roles in major Hollywood films: Dredd, Ant-Man, and last years hit reboot Creed. Not to mention, Harris has two films in post-production that are both slated for 2016 releases.

5 Will Patton (Coach Bill Yoast)

The beloved, former coach of T.C. Williams High School, Bill Yoast, was more or less replaced by Coach Herman Boone by the school board. At a time when racial tensions were at their peak for a small town community, this move did not sit right with many of its citizens. Out of respect, Boone offered to keep Yoast on staff as an assistant coach; an offer than he later begrudgingly accepted.

In the years since the hit football drama, Will Patton has gone back and forth between television and film, but is still probably most well known for his stints on various popular television series. For the past decade and a half, Patton has had recurring roles on Numb3rs, 24, The Agency, The Good Wife, and has also starred as Captain Weaver on Falling Skies for over 50 episodes.

4 Kate Bosworth (Emma Hoyt)

Emma Hoyt may not played a large role in Remember the Titans, but her character was key in illustrating the racial dynamics at play for a group of young men that learned to accept each other during their time at summer football camp. As Gerry Bertier’s girlfriend, Emma not only had trouble understanding his friendship with Julius Campbell, she also simply did not accept it.

Kate Bosworth may have only had a minor role as Emma in Remember the Titans, but she has gone on to receive great success in various films in recent years. Like Kip Pardue, she also served as a supporting character in Rules of Attraction, but lately has been receiving larger roles. In 2008 she acted alongside Jim Sturgess and Kevin Spacey in the crime thriller 21. Additionally, she has played Lois Lane in Superman Returns and contributed her talents to the film that got Julianne Moore her Oscar, Still Alice.

3 Donald Faison (Petey Jones)

Petey Jones started the film as a flashy, all-star running back, but his trouble holding on to the football later cost him his job as a starter. Coach Boone made it clear that performance was the only thing that mattered on his team. White or black made no difference in his eyes. Petey did eventually get a chance to see the field – on Coach Yoast’s defense. Like Boone, Yoast’s main priority was winning football games.

Donald Faison has gone on to amass great success in his career as an actor since his role on Remember the Titans, but he is probably most well-known for his starring role as one half of one of the greatest bromances in television history on the comedy hit Scrubs. In addition to his role on the long-running comedy series, Faison has also lent his talents to The Exes and occasionally voice acts on the animated comedic series Robot Chicken.

2 Hayden Panettiere (Sheryl Yoast)

As Coach Bill Yoast’s daughter, Sheryl Yoast was a young, boisterous tomboy. Like her dad, she loved the game of football and cheered on the Titans from the sidelines during each and every game. Sheryl was as displeased as anyone to find that her father had been replaced as Head Coach, but even she had to admit that Coach Boone ran a pretty good team.

Hayden Panettiere has truly gone on to be one of the most beautiful and talented woman in all of Hollywood. In the past decade alone, she has starred in two long-running, successful television shows – Nashville and Heroes – and has starred in several films. In addition to these numerous roles, Panettiere also has worked as a successful voice actor in cartoons and in video games. Most notably she lent her acting talents to films and television series such as A Bug’s Life, American Dad!, and has even voiced Kari in the successful video game franchise Kingdom Hearts.

1 Ryan Gosling (Alan Bosley)

Alan Bosley may not have been a major part of the the Remember the Titans movie, but we still remember his ridiculous dancing, his goofy facial expressions and, of course, his love of country music. Even with such a small role, Bosley left his mark as memorable character after all of these years.

Even though Alan Bosley was not a main character in the film, Ryan Gosling has gone on to be one of Hollywood’s biggest movie stars. Gosling has starred in several films, including but not limited to: The Ides of March, Crazy Stupid Love, The Notebook, Drive, Gangster Squad, Blue Valentine, The Big Short, Lars and the Real Girl, and of course his Oscar nominated role in the 2006 film Half Nelson. He continues to be a high-grossing, top billing actor, and has several upcoming projects on the way, including the highly anticipated Shane Black film The Nice Guys; slated to hit theaters May 20, 2016.
